Short answer: A hair diffuser spreads the dryer's airflow so curls and waves dry in their natural shape instead of being blown apart. Put a curl cream or gel on soaking-wet hair, cup sections into the diffuser on low speed and medium heat, and don't touch until it's 80 to 90 percent dry. Our styler pick is Sebastian Twisted Curl Magnifier ($49.24), or Kérastase Curl Manifesto Crème de Jour ($70.56) as the premium option.

Diffusing is the fastest way to dry curly or wavy hair without frizz. It's also the step most people get wrong: too much heat, too much fiddling, and the diffuser held like a normal nozzle. This is the method we teach clients with waves and curls at the salon, plus which hair dryer and diffuser to use.
What does a hair diffuser do?
A diffuser is the wide, bowl-shaped attachment with prongs that clips onto the end of a hair dryer. It slows the air and spreads it over a wider area. Instead of a jet of air pushing curls in every direction, you get gentle heat that sets the curl where it already sits. The prongs also lift at the root, so you get volume without a brush.
It works on 2a waves right through to tight coils. If you're not sure where your hair sits, our hair types chart explains the numbers.
How to diffuse hair: step by step
- Style on soaking-wet hair. Straight from the shower, before you towel off. Curls clump best when they're wet.
- Apply your styler. Rake a cream through, then scrunch upwards. For more hold, layer a gel over the top.
- Blot, don't rub. Scrunch out the drips with a microfibre towel or an old T-shirt.
- Set the dryer to low speed, medium heat. High speed with a diffuser still creates frizz.
- Hover first. Hold the diffuser around the head without touching for two or three minutes so a light cast forms.
- Pixie-diffuse. Lower a section of hair into the bowl, lift it gently to the scalp, hold for 30 to 60 seconds, then move away with the dryer off or on cool. Work around the head.
- Stop at 80 to 90 percent dry. Leave the rest to air-dry. Finish with a cool shot.
- Scrunch out the crunch. Once it's completely dry, scrunch with a drop of oil on your palms to break any gel cast.
Hair diffuser for curly hair: which products to use
The diffuser only dries the shape you've already made, so the styler matters as much as the dryer.

Need more hold than a cream gives? Sebastian Texturizer Liquid Gel ($43.08) is made for air-drying or diffusing waves and curls, and it layers over a cream. Kérastase doesn't make a gel, so if hold is the priority that's a Sebastian job. A lower-priced cream option is Wella EIMI Curl Shaper ($33.00).
Want the whole Sebastian curl routine in one go? The Twisted routine bundle ($157.06) has the wash, conditioner, mask and cream.
Blow dryer with diffuser: does the dryer matter?
Yes, but less than people think. What you want is a low-speed setting, a medium heat setting, a cool shot, and a diffuser that fits properly. A cheap dryer on high with no low option will frizz curls no matter which attachment you use.
We use the ghd helios ($317.97) in the salon. It has multiple speed and heat settings and a cool shot, and the official ghd hair dryer diffuser ($37.60) clips on to it. Our hair dryer guide compares the ghd dryers.
Should I diffuse on hot or cold?
Medium heat to set the shape, then cool to finish. Full heat dries the outside fast and leaves the inside damp, which is how you get frizz on top and limp curls underneath. If you diffuse most days, use a heat protectant that won't weigh curls down. Our heat protectant guide has the light options.
Why is my hair frizzy after diffusing?
- Speed too high. Drop to low. It takes longer and that's fine.
- Touching while it dries. Every touch before the cast sets breaks up the curl clumps.
- Not enough product, or product on damp hair instead of wet. Apply in the shower.
- Moving the diffuser in circles. Hold it still, then lift away.
- Dry hair underneath it all. A weekly mask helps. See our guide to getting rid of frizzy hair.
How to diffuse short hair
Short curly hair won't fit into the bowl the same way, and that's fine. Rest the diffuser against the head and let the prongs sit in the hair at the roots, then hold still. Move it around every 30 seconds or so. Use less product than you would on long hair, because short curls dry fast and too much cream leaves them heavy. A light gel helps short curls keep their shape through the day.
Can you diffuse without a diffuser?
Sort of. Take the nozzle off, set the dryer to low speed, and keep it moving at arm's length while you scrunch upwards with your other hand. It works, but it's slower and frizzier. If you dry curls with heat more than once a week, a proper diffuser that fits your dryer pays for itself in less frizz and less product. You can also just air-dry: apply your styler, plop the hair in a T-shirt for 20 minutes, then leave it.
Diffusing wavy hair vs curly hair
Wavy hair (2a to 2c) is easily weighed down. Use less product, go lighter (a spray or light cream rather than a rich butter), and diffuse with the bowl held a little further away. Our wavy hair routine goes step by step. Curly and coily hair can take richer creams and longer in the bowl. The full method is in our curly hair guide.
Not ready to use heat at all? Heatless curls overnight are another option. If you'd like someone to show you on your own hair, our curly hair specialists will diffuse with you in the chair so you can copy it at home.
Questions we get asked
How do you use a hair diffuser?
Apply a curl cream or gel to soaking-wet hair, blot with a microfibre towel, set your dryer to low speed and medium heat, then cup sections of hair into the diffuser bowl and lift towards the scalp. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds, move on, and stop when hair is 80 to 90 percent dry.
Does diffusing damage your hair?
Any heat can dry hair out over time, but diffusing uses low speed and medium heat, which is gentler than a normal blow-dry. Use a light heat protectant and finish on cool if you diffuse most days.
Should I diffuse my hair on hot or cold?
Medium heat to set the curl, then cool to finish. Full heat dries the outside first and can leave the inside damp and frizzy.
Can you diffuse straight hair?
You can, and it adds root volume and a bit of bend, but it won't create curl in hair that has none. For waves on straight hair, a texture spray and diffuser help a little; a tong or wand works better.
Why is my hair frizzy after diffusing?
The usual causes are the dryer on high speed, touching the hair before the cast sets, applying product to damp rather than wet hair, or moving the diffuser in circles. Slow down, hold still and leave it alone until mostly dry.
Do I need a special hair dryer to diffuse?
No, but it needs a low-speed setting, a medium heat setting and a cool shot, and the diffuser must fit properly. The ghd helios has all three and takes the official ghd diffuser.
What product should I use before diffusing curly hair?
A curl cream to define and soften, such as Sebastian Twisted Curl Magnifier or Kérastase Curl Manifesto Crème de Jour. If you want more hold, layer a gel like Sebastian Texturizer Liquid Gel over the cream.
How long should it take to diffuse hair?
Usually 10 to 25 minutes depending on length and density. Stopping at 80 to 90 percent dry and letting the rest air-dry gives softer curls and less frizz.
