Short answer: For balayage in Wānaka, pick a colourist who insists on a consultation first, checks your tone in natural light, builds bond care into the lightener, can explain where the brightness will sit, and sends you home with a plan. At UKIYO, first-time balayage is from $335 (2 hr 30 min), a full refresh or maintenance from $285, and a free 15-minute consultation comes first.
Updated November 2026. Service prices are from our live price list and are confirmed at your consultation.
Most people looking for balayage in Wānaka have a folder of saved photos already. Photos show that a colourist got a good result once, on someone else's hair. They don't show how the work was planned, how it grew out, or what the bill was by the time the toner bowl was rinsed.
So below is a checklist you can take to any salon, here or in Cromwell, Alexandra or Hāwea. Under each point is what we do at UKIYO, so you can compare like with like.
How do you choose the best balayage colourist in Wānaka?
Five things decide whether a balayage grows out softly or needs fixing in eight weeks. Ask about each one before you book.
1. A consultation before the first appointment
Balayage is planned around your colour history. If someone's happy to paint your hair without seeing it first, they're guessing. A good colourist wants to look at it, hear what's been on it for the last couple of years, and agree a price before anything is mixed.
At UKIYO: a free 15-minute consultation is required before every first-time or new-client balayage. We map placement, depth and tone, and you leave knowing the price for your hair.
2. Tone checked in natural light
Salon downlights flatter everything. Wānaka light doesn't. A toner that looks creamy at the mirror can read brassy on the lakefront at midday, so ask whether your colourist checks tone by a window.
At UKIYO: consultations happen in natural light, the studio has floor-to-ceiling windows, and every balayage includes a custom toner and gloss mixed to the shade we agreed at the start.
3. Bond care while the hair is lifting
Lightener breaks some of the hair's internal bonds as it works. Protection does the most good in the bowl, alongside the lightener, rather than as a rescue treatment a month later.
At UKIYO: we recommend Wellaplex Bond Restore with every balayage. It's a $45 add-on, takes about 10 minutes, and you can add it when you book online.
4. Placement that suits how you actually wear your hair
Ask where the brightness will land when your hair's tied up, flipped to the other parting, or tucked behind your ears. Good balayage is painted for your cut and your parting, not traced off a reference photo.
At UKIYO: balayage is hand-painted freehand. A first-time balayage builds dimension from your existing colour. A full refresh works roots to ends, panel by panel. Maintenance concentrates on the top sections and face frame, where it shows most.
5. An aftercare plan and a rebook date
You should finish the appointment knowing what to wash with, when to come back and roughly what that next visit costs.
At UKIYO: before you leave we go through the products that keep your colour where it is, and book the next appointment.
If you're still deciding between balayage and foils, our guide to balayage vs foils vs babylights covers it. Short version: balayage is painted by hand and grows out softly, foils give crisper, brighter lift.
How much does balayage cost in Wānaka?
It depends on your stylist's level and on your hair's length, density and condition. These are our "from" prices by level, taken from the price list. Your exact price is confirmed at consultation, and a toner is included in every balayage.
| Service | Time | Rebook | Rising | Senior | Master |

Kelsey and Jasmine are Senior stylists. Nicole, Yvie and Jack are Master stylists. Every level is on the price list, and our balayage price guide for NZ explains why quotes vary so much from salon to salon.
Which balayage should you book, and with whom?
- Never had balayage, or new to us: book the free consultation, then a first-time balayage with Wellaplex added. Ask for Kelsey, whose specialisms are balayage and creative colour.
- Want the cut and colour planned together: Yvie, Master Stylist, works in dimensional colour and precision cutting.
- Tricky starting point, or a lot of old colour: Nicole, Master Stylist, advanced colour.
- Your balayage has grown out evenly but the face frame looks dull: a maintenance appointment, every 12 to 16 weeks.
- It's been six months and the ends are flat: a full refresh, roots to ends.
At home, there are two ways to look after it. If your balayage is blonde, Kérastase Blond Absolu is the one we'd choose: Bain Lumière ($57.12) to wash and Cicaflash Fondant ($70.56) to condition. If you'd rather spend a little less, Sebastian's NO.BREAKER Leave-In Cream ($63.32) keeps lightened lengths stronger between visits.
Balayage on a darker base doesn't need purple. Chroma Absolu Bain Riche Chroma Respect ($57.12) is made for colour-treated hair. For the weeks in between, read balayage maintenance between visits.
What it costs, how long it takes and how to book
- First-time balayage: from $335, 2 hr 30 min, after a free 15-minute consultation.

If you're driving in, Lake Hāwea is about 15 minutes away, Cromwell around 50 minutes along Lake Dunstan, and Alexandra a bit further again. If a separate trip for the consultation doesn't work, get in touch before your appointment and we'll add a complimentary consultation to the start of it.

Frequently asked questions
What does a first-time balayage cost at UKIYO?
From $365 with a Rising or Senior stylist and from $380 with a Master stylist. That includes a custom toner and gloss. The final price depends on your hair's length, density and condition, and we confirm it at your free consultation before anything is mixed. Wellaplex Bond Restore is an optional $45 add-on.
Do I need a consultation before balayage?
Yes, if it's your first balayage or you're new to UKIYO. It's free and takes 15 minutes. We look at your hair in natural light, ask about past colour, and agree placement, tone and price. If you're travelling in, we can add it to the start of your appointment.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
A first-time balayage and a full refresh are both booked for 2 hr 30 min. A maintenance balayage is 2 hr. Very long or thick hair can run over, and we'll tell you at the consultation if your appointment needs more time.
How often should I get my balayage redone?
We usually suggest maintenance every 12 to 16 weeks and have a full refresh about every six months. A toner on its own, from $55, can freshen the colour if it goes warm in between. Our balayage longevity guide has more detail.
Is Wellaplex worth adding to balayage?
We recommend it for every lightening service. Wellaplex Bond Restore goes in with the colour and helps protect the hair's internal bonds while it lifts, so hair feels stronger afterwards. It costs $45 and adds about 10 minutes to the appointment.
Can I get balayage over box dye or old colour?
Often, but it may need to be planned as a colour correction first. Box dye and old dark colour don't lift evenly, so we'd book a $25, 15-minute colour correction consultation with a senior or master stylist. Read colour correction explained for why.
Which stylist should I book for balayage near me in Wānaka?
Kelsey lists balayage as a specialism. Yvie works in dimensional colour, and Nicole in advanced colour. Jack also does lived-in colour. Each of them can be requested by name online, or call 03 443 1040 and we'll match you.
Do you see balayage clients from Cromwell and Alexandra?
Yes. Cromwell is about 50 minutes from the salon on Helwick Street, and there's public parking on the street and down by the lake. Book a morning slot and you'll be heading home by mid-afternoon.
