Is hair paste only for men?
No. We use paste on women's short cuts, pixies, choppy bobs and the ends of lobs to separate and define layers. Redken Pliable Paste 06 and Redken Texture Paste are flexible enough for this. Warm a pea-sized amount in your palms and twist it through the ends on dry hair.

Which gives a matte finish and which gives shine?
Redken Brews Clay Pomade is the most matte, with a dry, natural look. Redken Brews Work Hard Moulding Paste gives a firm hold with a low shine. Redken Spray Wax Invisible 10 is the lightest, misted over the top for grip without the stiffness. More about the Brews range in our Redken Brews guide.

How do I apply paste or wax properly?
Use dry hair, or hair that's just been blow-dried. Rub a small amount between your palms until it's warm and almost invisible, then work it in from the back of the head forward so the front doesn't get the most. Twist pieces with your fingertips for separation. Add more if you need it, as it's hard to take away.

How do I wash wax or clay out of my hair?
Apply shampoo to dry hair first, work it in and then add water. That breaks down the wax better than wetting your hair first. A second shampoo usually gets the rest. If it builds up over the week, a clarifying wash once a week helps. See our guide to clarifying and oily-root shampoos.
