Dark Oil is Sebastian's smoothing range, best known for the Styling Oil and its warm, distinctive scent. It suits most hair types that want shine and softness without feeling oily, and it's one of the most asked-for products at our Wānaka salon.

Which Dark Oil product, and how we use it +

The Smooth & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner are the base, with the Mask once a week for drier lengths. The Styling Oil is the hero. A pump or two through damp lengths before blow-drying, or a little on dry ends to finish.

For finer hair, the Silkening Hair Mist gives the same shine and scent in a much lighter spray, so it won't flatten. The Taming Elixir is a serum for frizz and flyaways on thicker hair. Will Sebastian Dark Oil make my hair greasy?
Not if you use the right amount. One pump is enough for fine or shoulder-length hair; thick or long hair might need two. Apply it to damp mid-lengths and ends, never the scalp, then blow-dry. If your hair still feels coated, try the Silkening Hair Mist instead, which gives a lighter finish with the same scent.

Should I use the Dark Oil shampoo and conditioner with the oil?
You don't have to. Lots of people use the Styling Oil on its own with their usual wash. The Smooth & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner make sense if you want the whole routine to smooth and soften, or you love the scent and want it to carry through. For dry hair the Mask is the most useful extra.

What's the difference between the Dark Oil Styling Oil and the Taming Elixir?
The Styling Oil is for shine and softness, and most hair types can use it. The Taming Elixir is a serum aimed at frizz and flyaways, with a heavier, more controlling feel, so it suits thicker or coarser hair best. Some clients with thick hair use both: oil on damp hair before drying, Elixir on dry ends to finish.

Is Dark Oil the right Sebastian range for very dry hair?
For dry hair that needs softness and shine, Dark Oil works well. If your hair feels genuinely parched and rough, Sebastian Hydre is the moisture range and puts more into the wash and mask steps. Can I use Dark Oil on dry hair between washes?
Yes. Warm a drop between your palms and smooth it over the ends and any frizz on day two or three. Keep it light and stay away from the roots, which get oilier as the days go on. The Silkening Hair Mist also works well for a quick refresh on dry hair.
