"Colour correction" is the most misunderstood — and most nerve-wracking — thing on a salon menu. If you've searched it after a box dye or a colour that went wrong, here's exactly what it is and why it costs what it does.

Colour correction is any service that fixes a colour result you don't want: box dye you want out, banding from years of root touch-ups, brass that won't tone away, a balayage grown out uneven, or a "went darker than I wanted" that needs lifting. It is genuinely different from a normal colour appointment — and pricing it like one is where people get a shock.

Why it's not a normal colour appointment

A regular colour follows a known path. A correction is problem-solving on hair with history. Your colourist has to work out what's already on the hair (often several products layered over years), lift or remove it without destroying the hair, then rebuild the tone you actually want — safely. That's chemistry, patience, and time. It's the difference between painting a fresh wall and stripping five old coats off first.

Why it often takes more than one session

Hair can only take so much in a day. Lifting artificial colour — especially dark box dye or a build-up of warmth — often can't be done in one sitting without compromising the hair's integrity. A responsible colourist will split it across two or three visits so your hair survives the process looking healthy. That's not upselling; it's the difference between a great result and breakage. Anyone promising to fix years of box dye to icy blonde in three hours is gambling with your hair.

Why it costs what it costs

Correction is usually charged by time and product, because both are unpredictable until the colourist is in the hair. In New Zealand a serious correction can run several hundred dollars — sometimes over a thousand across sessions — and that reflects hours of skilled work plus a lot of product. It feels steep next to a normal colour, but you're paying to undo a problem, not just add colour. Doing it cheaply (or at home) is usually how the problem got bigger in the first place.
