How to Maintain Your Balayage Between Salon Visits | UKIYO Wanaka
Our team shares the home-care routine that keeps balayage looking fresh between appointments — from purple shampoo to weekly treatments and heat protection.
Balayage is one of the most asked-for services in our colour chair, and one of the easiest to live with — provided the at-home routine matches the work we do in the salon. Done well, a soft, lived-in balayage will hold beautifully for eight to twelve weeks before you need to see us again. Done casually, that same colour can dull, brass out or feel dry within a month.
Below is the routine our team recommends to every client who leaves UKIYO with fresh balayage. It is simple, it is consistent, and it makes a real difference.
Why balayage rewards a proper routine
Unlike a full head of foils, balayage is hand-painted to grow out softly. There is no harsh regrowth line, which is what gives you those twelve-week stretches between visits. But that longer interval also means your hair has more time at home, exposed to chlorine, sun, hot tools and hard water, before we see it again.
The goal of a good maintenance routine is twofold: keep the tone clean (no unwanted yellow or orange), and keep the integrity of the lightened ends intact.
The four habits that protect your colour
1. Use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner
Sulphates strip colour, full stop. Switching to a sulphate-free, colour-safe wash is the single biggest change you can make. We stock a small, considered range of professional products in the salon that we have personally tested on our own clients — ask us at your next visit and we will match you to the right one for your hair type.
Wash two to three times a week at most. Over-washing is one of the fastest ways to dull a balayage.
2. Add a purple or violet toning shampoo once a week
For lighter balayage, a purple toning shampoo neutralises warmth between salon visits. The trick is restraint. Once a week, left on for three to five minutes, is plenty. Daily use, or leaving it on for too long, can leave a dull, ashy cast that nobody is asking for.
If your balayage sits more in the caramel or honey range, swap the purple for a blue toning shampoo, which targets orange tones rather than yellow.
3. Treat heat as a guest, not a habit
Lightened ends are more porous than virgin hair, which means they take heat damage faster. A heat protectant before every blow-dry, curl or straighten is non-negotiable. Aim for the lowest effective temperature on your tools — most styling can be done well below 200°C.
Air-dry where you can, and consider a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce overnight friction.
4. Book a weekly treatment at home
A weekly mask is what keeps balayage feeling soft rather than straw-like. We recommend leaving a deep conditioner in for ten minutes once a week, ideally on a midweek wash so your hair is in its best condition by the weekend.
For clients who want something more targeted, our in-salon treatments and rituals are designed to slot in alongside your colour appointments — Kerastase Fusio-Dose in particular is a quiet hero for restoring shine and elasticity.
When to come back in
For most balayage clients, we are looking at:
- A gloss or toner refresh at six to eight weeks to keep the tone clean
- A full balayage top-up at ten to twelve weeks
- A bond or hydration treatment every second visit, depending on condition
If your colour is starting to feel brassy, dull or dry sooner than that, do not wait — a quick gloss in the chair is far kinder to your hair than scrubbing at it with the wrong shampoo.
A note on water
Wanaka water is generally kind to hair, but if you swim regularly — pool or lake — wet your hair with fresh water before you get in. Saturated hair absorbs less chlorine, salt and minerals. Rinse thoroughly afterwards and follow up with a clarifying treatment every few weeks.
