Short answer: For medium to thick hair that's dry or frizzy, our pick is Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Cream ($60.35). It conditions and gives a soft, flexible hold, on damp or dry hair. If your hair is fine, use the spray version, Potion 9 Lite ($60.35), or Kérastase Lotion Thermique ($65.52) if you blow-dry. Bleached or breaking hair is better off with Sebastian NO.BREAKER Leave-In Cream ($63.32).

Nearly every client at our Helwick Street salon gets a leave-in before the blow-dry. Wānaka air is dry for most of the year. Heat pumps run all winter, then summer brings sun and lake water, and the ends of longer hair are where you see it first.

These are the leave-ins we actually stock and who each one suits. We've picked a favourite, and we'll also tell you when it's the wrong one for your hair.

What's the best leave-in conditioner in NZ?

For most people who sit in our chair with dry or frizzy lengths, it's Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Cream. Sebastian describes it as a cream conditioner with nine botanical extracts that restores moisture, adds flexible hold, renews shine and makes hair easier to manage. So it's a conditioner and a soft styling cream in one tube, which means one product on damp hair where you'd otherwise be layering two or three.

On medium and thick hair it behaves well. You can put it on damp hair and blow-dry, or leave it to air-dry, and it doesn't go stiff. On day two you can rub a little more through dry ends to settle them again, and Sebastian's own directions say exactly that: damp hair for a silky finish, dry hair for more texture and control. That second-day use is the one clients tell us they rely on.

It's a cream, though, and creams have some weight. On fine hair that's a problem, which is why the table below doesn't put it first for everyone.

Which leave-in conditioner suits my hair type?

Your hair Leave-in Price Why this one
Medium to thick, dry or frizzy Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-In Cream 145ml $60.35 Conditions and holds softly. Damp or dry hair.
Fine, goes flat easily Sebastian Potion 9 Lite $60.35 A mist version, made not to weigh fine hair down
Fine to normal, blow-dried most days Kérastase Nutritive Lotion Thermique $65.52 Light leave-in milk with heat protection
Dry and thick, blow-dried most days Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique $65.52 Heat-protecting leave-in cream for dry lengths
Bleached, coloured or snapping Sebastian NO.BREAKER Leave-In Cream $63.32 Bond-building, heat protection to 230°C
Blonde, lightened Kérastase Blond Absolu Cicaplasme $70.56 Made for fragile blonde, heat protection to 230°C
Frizz on humid days Color Wow Dream Coat $54.95 A humidity-resistant blow-dry spray, not a conditioner
Wavy Wella NutriCurls Milky Waves $44.88 Light leave-in mist that defines waves

All of these are in stock as we write this. If a product shows as sold out on the day you read it, the next row up or down is usually the closest swap.

What's the best leave-in conditioner for dry, frizzy hair?

Most frizz we see on dry hair is the ends lifting because they've run out of moisture. A leave-in cream fixes that better than a spray, because there's more of it left on the hair. That's where Potion 9 earns its place.

If your frizz is mostly about the weather, the type that's fine at home and puffs up the moment you walk outside on a damp day, a leave-in alone won't hold it. Put Color Wow Dream Coat on before the blow-dry instead, or as well. And if the ends still look fluffy once you're dry, two or three of Potion 9 Super Luxe Styling Drops smoothed over the top will usually finish the job. There's more on that in our guide to fixing dry, frizzy ends between trims, and the bigger picture on frizz is in how to get rid of frizzy hair.

Is Potion 9 good for fine hair?

The cream usually isn't, and we'd rather say so than sell you the wrong tube. Fine hair has less to hold a cream up, so it ends up flat at the root and stringy at the ends.

Use Potion 9 Lite instead. Sebastian made it as the lighter, mist-on version of the same formula for exactly this reason. If you blow-dry most days, Kérastase Lotion Thermique is the other good option, because it adds heat protection. If you love the cream anyway, use a pea-sized amount on the last few centimetres only and keep it well away from your roots. Our guide to products for fine hair covers the rest of a fine-hair routine.

Leave-in conditioner or leave-in treatment: what's the difference?

A leave-in conditioner is everyday care. It softens, detangles and calms frizz, and you use it every time you wash. A leave-in treatment is aimed at a specific problem and you use it when that problem is there.

Plenty of people need a leave-in conditioner. Fewer need a treatment. If your hair is breaking rather than just dry, start with our damaged hair treatment guide.

Do I need a leave-in if I already use conditioner?

Not always. If your hair feels fine after a good rinse-out conditioner, you can skip it. Signs it's worth adding one: your ends tangle again by the time they're dry, you get a halo of frizz, or your lengths feel rough by mid-afternoon. A leave-in also suits anyone who air-dries, because there's no styling product doing that job for you. For the rinse-out half, see our best conditioner by hair type.

How do I use a leave-in conditioner properly?

  1. Towel-dry first. Squeeze the water out, don't rub. On dripping-wet hair a leave-in just slides off.
  2. Start small. For Potion 9 cream on shoulder-length hair, about the size of a 20-cent coin. Add more to the ends if they still feel dry.
  3. Mid-lengths and ends only. Warm it between your palms and work it in from below the ears. Roots don't need it.
  4. Comb it through with a wide-tooth comb so every strand gets some.
  5. Add heat protection if you use hot tools. Potion 9 isn't sold as a heat protectant, so if you straighten or curl, use Sebastian Trilliant as well, or choose NO.BREAKER or a Kérastase Thermique from the table. More in our heat protectant guide.
  6. Style as normal. Blow-dry or air-dry.

Questions we get asked

What is the best leave-in conditioner in NZ?

For medium to thick hair that's dry or frizzy, Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Cream. Fine hair suits Potion 9 Lite or Kérastase Lotion Thermique, and bleached or breaking hair suits Sebastian NO.BREAKER Leave-In Cream.

What is the best leave-in conditioner for dry, frizzy hair?

Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-In Cream on damp hair. If the frizz is mostly humidity, add Color Wow Dream Coat before blow-drying, and finish fluffy ends with a few Potion 9 Super Luxe Styling Drops.

What leave-in conditioner is best for fine hair?

A light spray or milk rather than a cream. Sebastian Potion 9 Lite if you air-dry, or Kérastase Nutritive Lotion Thermique if you blow-dry, as it also protects from heat.

Is Sebastian Potion 9 a heat protectant?

Sebastian doesn't sell it as one. If you use hot tools, add a heat protection spray such as Sebastian Trilliant, or use NO.BREAKER Leave-In Cream, which protects up to 230°C.

Do you put leave-in conditioner on wet or dry hair?

Damp, towel-dried hair is best for most leave-ins. Potion 9 cream can also go on dry hair to smooth ends and refresh a style between washes.

Can I use leave-in conditioner every day?

Yes, on your mid-lengths and ends. If your hair starts to feel heavy or flat, use less, or swap the cream for a lighter spray like Potion 9 Lite.

What's the difference between a leave-in conditioner and a leave-in treatment?

A leave-in conditioner is everyday softening, detangling and frizz control. A leave-in treatment targets a specific problem, like bond damage, split ends or overnight repair.
