Best Hair Treatment for Damaged Hair in NZ (Stylist Guide 2026)

A working stylist's view of the bond builders, deep treatments and rituals that actually rebuild damaged hair — and the marketing claims that quietly do not...

What "damaged hair" actually means

Damaged hair is a catch-all term. In the chair we usually break it into four categories, because each one needs a different treatment plan:

  • Chemical damage — over-lightened, over-coloured, box dye build-up
  • Heat damage — straighteners, blow-dryers, curlers used daily without protection
  • Mechanical damage — rough brushing, tight ponytails, extensions wear
  • Environmental damage — alpine sun, chlorine, salt water, hard water

A treatment that fixes one of these will not necessarily help with another. Knowing which kind of damage you are dealing with is the first step to choosing the right product.

A 15-minute in-salon consultation will tell you exactly which category you sit in. Most guests are a mix of two or three.

In-salon vs at-home — a quick reality check

At-home products are excellent for maintenance. They are not designed to undo serious damage on their own. A salon treatment uses higher concentrations, controlled timing, heat where appropriate, and is layered through specific sections at specific developer strengths.

A useful rule of thumb:

  • Mild damage (dry, dull, slight split ends) — at-home routine + monthly in-salon mask
  • Moderate damage (breakage, tangling, lost elasticity) — fortnightly in-salon Fusio-Dose for 6 weeks
  • Severe damage (chemical breakage, mid-shaft snapping) — weekly in-salon Wellaplex or Olaplex protocol + a haircut

The big five — what actually works

These are the treatments we use, sell, and recommend most often. None of them are magic on their own. All of them work brilliantly in the right hands.

1. Wellaplex

Bond builder used during chemical services and as a stand-alone in-salon treatment. Reconnects broken disulphide bonds in the hair structure.

  • Best for: preventing damage during colour, repairing recent over-processing
  • Format: in-salon ($25 – $50 add-on) and at-home Step 3
  • Frequency: every chemical service, plus weekly Step 3 at home
  • What it will not do: rebuild years of accumulated damage in one go

We use Wellaplex in almost every colour service at UKIYO. Browse the full Wella Ultimate Repair range for the home routine that pairs with it.

2. Olaplex

The original bond-builder. Different chemistry to Wellaplex but a similar goal.

  • Best for: repeated chemical services, fine hair that needs gentle rebuilding
  • Format: in-salon No. 1 + 2, at-home No. 0, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • Frequency: in-salon during colour, No. 3 weekly at home
  • What it will not do: add hydration. Olaplex strengthens; it does not moisturise.

A common mistake is using Olaplex No. 3 as a "mask". It is not a mask. It is a bond builder. You still need a separate hydrating mask after it.

3. Kerastase Fusio-Dose

Our most-loved in-salon ritual. Two ampoules — a concentrate and a booster — mixed live to your hair's exact needs (repair, density, shine, smoothness, hydration).

  • Best for: dull, dehydrated, lacklustre hair that needs a reset
  • Format: in-salon, 15 – 20 minutes, $40 – $70
  • Frequency: every 4 – 6 weeks, or weekly for 4 weeks if rebuilding
  • What it will not do: rebuild bonds — it conditions and replenishes, not repairs broken structure

Often the best result comes from layering Wellaplex (for structure) and Fusio-Dose (for shine, softness, hydration) in the same visit. Read more about Fusio-Dose at UKIYO.

4. K18

A leave-in molecular repair mist that works on the polypeptide chains, not the disulphide bonds. Different mechanism again.

  • Best for: noticeable lift in shine and elasticity within 4 – 6 uses
  • Format: in-salon ($30 – $50 add-on) and at-home leave-in
  • Frequency: weekly leave-in for the first 6 weeks, then monthly
  • What it will not do: replace conditioner. It is a repair step, not a daily product.

K18 has been one of the most genuinely impressive newer products in our shelf. Used correctly, the change in elasticity is visible after the first or second application.

5. Wella Ultimate Repair (full system)

A four-step at-home repair routine that pairs beautifully with in-salon work.

  • Best for: consistent at-home maintenance between salon visits
  • Format: Step 1 (in-salon booster), Step 2 (shampoo), Step 3 (mask), Step 4 (leave-in)
  • Frequency: every wash for shampoo, mask 2x per week
  • What it will not do: replace a deep in-salon treatment if you are already badly damaged

Which treatment is right for which situation

A quick guide based on what we see most often:

  • Just over-processed (recent balayage gone too far): Wellaplex in-salon weekly x 4, K18 at home
  • Heat-damaged ends from straighteners: Fusio-Dose monthly + Wella Ultimate Repair at home
  • Long, dry, dull hair you have not "treated" in years: Fusio-Dose every 4 weeks + Kerastase Resistance mask weekly
  • Fine hair that snaps when you brush it: K18 leave-in + Olaplex No. 3 weekly + a trim
  • Coarse, frizzy hair that has lost shine: Fusio-Dose with the Densifique booster + a smoothing service

What no treatment will do

We will be straight with you. No product, no salon ritual, no at-home routine will:

  • Mend split ends — only a haircut does that
  • Reverse heat-bubbled, chemically broken bonds at a structural level
  • Make extensions or wig hair feel new again
  • Replace a smoothing service for true frizz control

The honest truth is that damaged hair grows out. Treatments make life with it bearable, photogenic, and healthier as it grows — but the long-term plan is always: protect what is on your head, look after the new growth, and trim consistently.

A 90-day plan for visibly healthier hair

If you do nothing else, this is the plan we send most guests home with.

  • Week 1: in-salon Wellaplex + Fusio-Dose, plus a fresh trim
  • Weeks 2 – 4: weekly K18 or Olaplex No. 3 at home
  • Week 4: in-salon Fusio-Dose
  • Weeks 5 – 8: Wella Ultimate Repair shampoo + mask 2x weekly
  • Week 8: in-salon Fusio-Dose + 2cm trim
  • Weeks 9 – 12: maintenance routine — sulphate-free shampoo, mask weekly, heat protectant always
  • Week 12: in-salon assessment, photograph the change

By month three the difference is usually significant.
