Sebastian NO.BREAKER: The Bond Builder, Honestly Explained

Bond building is the most misunderstood category in haircare — and the one most worth understanding if you colour your hair.

Since Olaplex made "bonds" a household word, every brand has a version and most clients have no idea what any of them actually do. Sebastian NO.BREAKER is Sebastian's answer, and it's a genuinely good one. Here's the plain-English version.

What a bond builder actually does

Inside every hair are disulphide bonds — the internal links that give hair its strength and elasticity. Bleach and permanent colour break some of them. That's not a flaw in the process; it's how lightening works. The problem is that once enough bonds are broken, the hair loses elasticity, and hair without elasticity snaps.

A bond builder works on that internal structure rather than the surface. This is the difference between it and a conditioner or a mask: a mask makes damaged hair feel better by coating it, and that's worth having. A bond builder is trying to make the hair structurally stronger so it stops breaking in the first place.

Sebastian's claim is up to 20x stronger hair. Take the number with the usual marketing pinch of salt, but the category works — this is one of the few genuine advances in haircare in the last decade.

The five pieces, and the order they go in

Anti-Breakage Pre-Shampoo Crème (200ml)

Goes on before you shampoo, on dry or damp hair, for a few minutes. This is the piece people get wrong most often — it isn't a conditioner, and using it after washing wastes it. It's also the cheapest entry point to the range at under $37.

Nourishing & Bonding Shampoo (280ml)

The everyday cleanser. Gentle, no stripping, keeps the bonding work topped up between treatments.

Bonding Melting Mask (145ml)

Weekly, mid-lengths and ends, five to ten minutes. The name is accurate — it genuinely melts through hair that's hard to comb.

Bonding & Styling Leave-In Cream (145ml)

Leave-in, on damp hair, before you blow-dry. Doubles as a light styling cream. This is where the range starts earning its keep day to day rather than just on wash day.

Bond-Building & Styling Treatment Spray (100ml)

A lighter leave-in for fine hair, or for anyone who finds the cream too much. Same job, less weight.

NO.BREAKER or Olaplex?

The honest answer: both work, and the chemistry differs more than the outcome does. We've seen good results from both on real heads.

Where NO.BREAKER wins for most people is that it's a complete routine — pre-shampoo, shampoo, mask, two leave-ins — rather than a hero treatment with supporting cast. It's also a nicer sensory experience, and it's less heavy on fine hair than some bond systems, which tend to build up.

Where Olaplex wins is name recognition and a very well-known standalone No.3 treatment.

If your hair is virgin, uncoloured and healthy, a bond builder is solving a problem you don't have. Spend the money on moisture or a good oil instead. Bond building is corrective, not preventative — it isn't a vitamin.

How to run it

• Start with the pre-shampoo crème and the shampoo — that's the backbone.
• Mask weekly. Leave-in on damp hair before every blow-dry.
• Expect the elasticity change over three to four weeks, not overnight.
• Tell your stylist you're using it. It changes what we can do in one sitting.
