The Best Hair Products for Fine, Thinning Hair in NZ

Fine vs thinning — they are not the same thing

This is the first thing we untangle in every consultation. The two words get used interchangeably, but they need very different solutions.

  • Fine hair describes the diameter of each individual strand — soft, often abundant, just thin per hair
  • Thinning hair describes a drop in density — fewer hairs per square centimetre than there used to be
  • Hair loss is active shedding above the normal 50 – 100 hairs per day

Many guests are dealing with two of the three at once. The right product strategy depends entirely on which you are facing.

If you are not sure, a free 15-minute consultation will give you a clear picture. Book one through our contact page.

What works (and what is marketing)

The supermarket and pharmacy shelves are full of products promising "thicker, fuller hair." Most of them are temporary thickening polymers that coat the hair to give the appearance of more density. They wash out in 1 – 2 shampoos and do nothing for the scalp underneath.

A genuinely effective routine for fine or thinning hair has three layers:

1. Scalp care — addressing the environment the hair grows in 2. Strand support — protecting and plumping each individual hair 3. Styling that adds visible density without weighing the hair down

Skip any one of those and the result is short-lived.

Our shortlist for fine and thinning hair

These are the systems we use, sell and recommend most often at UKIYO. Browse the full thinning hair collection for the complete range.

1. Wella SP Scalp & Hair Thickening Tonic

The product we reach for most often for noticeable density loss. A leave-in tonic massaged into the scalp daily.

  • Best for: visible density loss, post-pregnancy shedding, post-illness shedding
  • Format: leave-in tonic, used on damp scalp
  • Frequency: daily for 12 weeks, then every other day
  • Pair with: Wella SP Densify shampoo and conditioner

Browse the full Wella SP Scalp & Hair Thickening range. Most guests see a visible change within 8 – 12 weeks of consistent use.

2. Kerastase Densifique (Stemoxydine)

The luxury system, beautifully formulated, easy to keep up with at home.

  • Best for: fine hair losing density gradually, peri-menopausal density change
  • Format: ampoules, shampoo, mousse-in-cream
  • Frequency: ampoules nightly for 6 weeks, then maintenance routine
  • Pair with: Densifique Bain Densite shampoo

The Densifique ampoules are particularly well-loved by guests who notice the change in their part width or temple density.

3. Redken Cerafill Defy / Retaliate

A workhorse system that does what it promises without breaking the bank.

  • Best for: fine hair, gradual thinning, men and women
  • Format: shampoo, conditioner, leave-in dense fx
  • Frequency: every wash
  • Pair with: weekly scalp scrub

A great entry-level system for guests who want to take action but are not ready to commit to the higher-end ampoules.

4. Kerastase Bain Stimuliste (or scalp tonic of choice)

For guests with active shedding, a stimulating scalp wash and tonic combination boosts circulation at the follicle.

  • Best for: stress shedding, telogen effluvium recovery, post-trauma hair loss
  • Frequency: 2 – 3 washes a week, swap with hydrating shampoo
  • Pair with: Aminexil ampoules for active treatment phases

5. Olaplex / K18 for damaged fine hair

Fine hair breaks more easily than coarse hair. If your fine hair is also chemically processed, a bond builder is non-negotiable.

  • Best for: fine, lightened, or chemically treated hair
  • Frequency: weekly leave-in (K18) or weekly mask (Olaplex No. 3)
  • Pair with: a hydrating mask on rotation

Styling — the often overlooked half

Even the best treatments cannot give you the appearance of density on day one. Styling does that. The way fine hair is cut, dried, and finished makes more difference to how thick it looks than any product.

What works:

  • A cut with internal layers — adds movement and visual fullness without removing weight
  • A blow-dry over a round brush, lifting at the root
  • Texture spray at the roots before brushing out — Kevin Murphy Doo.Over or Wella EIMI Body Crafter
  • Volume mousse applied to wet roots only
  • A side or zigzag part to disguise visible scalp at the part line
  • Soft balayage at the front to lift visible density (light reflects, gives the eye more to read)

What to avoid:

  • Heavy oils on the lengths
  • Centre parts on the same line every day
  • Conditioner at the roots
  • Heavy serums or wax
  • Tight ponytails that traction-pull the hairline

If your cut is wrong for fine hair, no product will fix it. Our stylist team will reshape it for you.

When to see a doctor

We will always be upfront with this part. There are situations where a salon routine is not enough, and a GP or dermatologist visit is the right next step.

See your doctor if:

  • You are losing more than 100 hairs a day for more than 6 weeks
  • You have noticeable bald patches or sudden density loss in one area
  • You have scalp pain, scaling, or itching along with hair loss
  • Your hair loss came after a major life event (illness, surgery, loss, birth) and is not improving by month four
  • There is a family history of female-pattern hair loss

Common medical causes that can be treated include thyroid imbalance, iron deficiency, hormonal shifts, and androgenic patterning. A blood test is a good starting point.

We have a small list of trusted GPs and trichologists in Wanaka and Queenstown we are happy to recommend.

A 90-day plan for visible change

If you are starting from scratch, this is the routine we send most guests home with:

  • Week 1 – 2: scalp scrub once, switch to thickening shampoo and conditioner
  • Week 1 onward: scalp tonic or ampoules nightly
  • Week 2: in-salon scalp ritual or treatment
  • Weeks 2 – 12: consistent at-home routine, no skipping
  • Week 6: in-salon check-in, reassess
  • Week 12: photograph the change, decide on next phase

By month three, most guests see a visible difference in density at the part line and around the temples — not because new hair has grown, but because the hair already there is healthier, thicker per strand, and styled to show it.
