Short answer: Fluffy hair is usually a mix of dryness and a natural wave that's being dried straight. You calm it by putting light moisture in, not heavy oil on, which flattens the roots and leaves the ends fluffy anyway. Our pick is Sebastian Potion 9 Lite ($60.35) for fine hair and Potion 9 Leave-In ($60.35) for medium to thick hair, with a light conditioner such as Kérastase Lait Vital.

"My hair's just fluffy" is one of the things we hear most, usually with a sigh. It's soft, there's lots of it, and it won't sit down. It isn't quite frizz. It's more like the hair can't decide which way to go.

The good news is that fluffy hair is often healthy hair. It just needs the right amount of weight, and that amount is small.

Why is my hair so fluffy?

Usually it's one or two of these:

  • Hidden wave. Very common. If your hair dries with a slight bend at the back or kinks around your face, there's a wave pattern being brushed out. Brushing a loose wave when it's dry breaks it up into fluff.
  • Dryness. Dry strands don't sit together. Colour, lightening and sun all add to it.
  • Lots of fine hair. Plenty of strands, very little weight. In a dry Wānaka winter that turns into static too.
  • The wrong wash. A volumising or clarifying shampoo every wash, or hard water, leaves the lengths rough. Our hard water guide covers the Central Otago side of that.
  • New growth. Short hairs around the hairline standing straight up are often regrowth, after a baby or after some breakage. That's hair growing back. Our postpartum hair guide talks about it.
  • How it's dried. Rubbed with a towel, then left to air-dry while you move around and touch it.

Why does my hair go fluffy after I wash it?

Freshly washed hair has nothing on it. No scalp oil, no product. Day-two hair often sits better because a little of your own oil has worked down the strands and given them some weight. That tells you what day one is missing: a little moisture and weight through the lengths, put in while the hair is still damp.

Is fluffy hair the same as frizzy hair?

They overlap. Fluffy hair is soft and airy all over and mostly holds its shape, just with more volume than you want. Frizzy hair feels rougher, has kinks and flyaways, and gets worse in humid weather. Plenty of people have both. If yours feels rough or puffs up when it's damp out, read how to fix frizzy hair as well. The routine is similar, frizz just needs a bit more.

How do you make hair less fluffy without flattening it?

The usual mistake is reaching for a heavy oil or a rich mask. It does flatten the fluff, at the roots, and the ends keep doing their own thing. What you want is light moisture on damp hair, from the mid-lengths down.

  1. Use a gentle shampoo and a light conditioner. Lait Vital is a light Kérastase conditioner for normal to slightly dry hair. It detangles and softens without weighing hair down. Potion 9 Conditioner is the Sebastian option.
  2. Squeeze, don't rub. A microfibre towel or a cotton T-shirt.
  3. Leave-in while it's damp. Three or four sprays of Potion 9 Lite through fine hair, or about a 20-cent piece of Potion 9 Leave-In through medium to thick hair. Comb it through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  4. Then pick one: dry it or leave it. If you blow-dry, use a brush with a bit of tension and point the nozzle down the hair. If you air-dry, scrunch once and leave it alone. Touching it while it dries is what makes fluff.
  5. Finish with shine, not weight. One drop of Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops rubbed between your palms and pressed over the top layer. The 15ml travel size goes further than you'd think.

If you actually like the volume, use Lite only and skip the oil. Fluffy styles are popular at the moment, and Lite gives you soft, separated fluff that looks done on purpose.

What products are best for fluffy hair?

The ones we'd use, with live prices:

Product Best for Price
Sebastian Potion 9 Lite Fine fluffy hair. Light, keeps your volume. $60.35
Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-In Medium to thick fluffy hair $60.35
Kérastase Nutritive Lait Vital Light conditioner for normal to slightly dry hair $65.52
Sebastian Potion 9 Conditioner Everyday conditioner, all hair types $47.60
Kérastase Gloss Absolu Oil (Glaze Drops) 45ml A drop for shine on the top layer $70.56
Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops 15ml Same, smaller bottle to try $26.95

Potion 9 is the one we lean on for fluffy hair because it's moisture and light hold together, so the hair sits without going flat. UKIYO is Wella New Zealand's No.1 Sebastian Professional retailer, and we keep both versions in stock. For a wider comparison, see our leave-in conditioner guide. For a lighter everyday conditioner, Lait Vital sits in the Kérastase Nutritive range; our best conditioner guide has others by hair type.

Could my fluffy hair actually be wavy?

Often, yes. Try this once. After washing, put Potion 9 Leave-In through soaking wet hair, scrunch upwards and let it dry without touching it. If you get a bend or a loose S-shape, you've got wave, and your hair will look much less fluffy once you stop brushing it out. Our curly and wavy shampoo guide and curly hair care guide pick it up from there.

Could it be my haircut?

Sometimes. Lots of short layers in fine hair, or heavy thinning with texturising scissors, leaves loads of short ends that won't lie down. A stylist can take weight out in a way that works with the fluff instead. If you're in Wānaka, book in with us and we'll look at the cut and the routine together.

Questions we get asked

Why is my hair so fluffy after I wash it?

Clean hair has no oil or product on it, so there's nothing to help the strands sit together. Put a light leave-in through the lengths while the hair is still damp and it usually settles.

How do I make my hair less fluffy without it looking greasy?

Use a light leave-in such as Sebastian Potion 9 Lite from the mid-lengths down, keep it off the roots, and finish with one drop of oil at most.

Is Potion 9 good for fluffy hair?

Yes. It adds moisture and a soft hold, which is what fluffy hair needs. Potion 9 Lite suits fine hair, Potion 9 Leave-In suits medium to thick hair.

Why is my hair fluffy and frizzy at the same time?

Usually dryness plus a natural wave that's being brushed out. Hydrate, use a leave-in on damp hair and stop brushing it dry. Our frizzy hair guide has the full routine.

Will hair oil fix fluffy hair?

A drop helps with shine on the top layer. Too much flattens the roots and looks greasy, especially on fine hair, while the ends stay fluffy. Moisture from a leave-in does more.

Does fluffy hair mean my hair is damaged?

Not usually. Fluffy hair is often healthy hair that's a bit dry or has a hidden wave. If it's snapping or feels rough and stretchy when wet, that's damage, and a repair routine comes first.

How do guys make fluffy hair less fluffy?

Put a small amount of Potion 9 Leave-In through damp hair and blow-dry it in the direction you want it to sit. On short hair the cut matters a lot too, so ask your barber or stylist to take weight out differently.
