Is Central Otago's Hard Water Wrecking Your Hair? (And How to Fix It)
If your colour goes dull fast, your ends feel dry no matter what you do, or your hair has a faint film that won't rinse out — the culprit might not be your shampoo. It might be your water.
This is one we notice living and working in Central Otago. A lot of hair "problems" here are actually a water problem, and once you know that, the fix is simple.
What hard water does to hair
Hard water is high in minerals — calcium and magnesium, and sometimes copper and iron. Every time you wash, a little more of those minerals deposit on the hair. Over weeks they build into a film that: makes colour look dull and fade faster, stops moisture getting in so hair feels dry and rough however much conditioner you use, weakens the strand and increases breakage, and can leave blondes looking dingy or brassy. It's also why your lovely salon colour can look flat two weeks later.
The Central Otago factor
Bore water, well water and even some town supply around the wider region can run hard, and copper from older plumbing makes it worse for blondes (that faint green/dingy cast). Add our dry alpine air and a lot of heat styling in winter, and hair here takes a real beating. If your hair felt different after you moved to the region, this is often why.
The fix: clarify, then chelate
Regular shampoo doesn't remove mineral buildup — you need the right tool:
- A clarifying shampoo deep-cleans product and oil buildup. Redken Hair Cleansing Cream is the reliable weekly-reset option.
- A chelating / decalcifying shampoo is the real hard-water hero — it actually binds and lifts the metal minerals out. Kérastase Première Bain Décalcifiant (or the Concentré for a stronger treatment) is built exactly for this. Use it every week or two and you'll feel your hair "come back".
Don't over-clarify though — once a week is plenty, and always follow with a rich mask (Première Masque or Filler) because clarifying is thorough and hair likes moisture back afterwards.
The pro tip: clarify before your colour appointment
Mineral buildup can stop colour taking evenly and dull the result. Doing a decalcifying wash a day or two before your colour appointment helps your colour go on cleaner and last longer — ask us and we'll tell you when.
Protect the colour too
If hard water is fading your colour, pair the clarifying routine with a colour-protect range like Chroma Absolu to hold richness between visits, and read how to make your colour last longer. Shop the hard-water edit below — it's the routine we recommend to clients right across the district.

Somewhere in your 40s or 50s your hair can quietly become a different animal — thinner on top, drier, more wiry, slower to grow, harder to style. It's not you doing something wrong. It's hormones, ...

You wouldn't build a skincare routine and ignore the skin under your hair — but that's exactly what most of us do. Your scalp is skin, and healthy hair genuinely starts there. "Scalp skinification"...
