Wedding hair in Central Otago is its own discipline
Getting married in Wanaka, Queenstown or Cromwell is not the same as getting married in Auckland or Christchurch. The wind on a lakefront ceremony, the alpine sun, the long days, the helicopter ride to the ridge — all of it shapes the way wedding hair has to be planned and built.
We have looked after brides at almost every venue in the region, and this is the guide we wish more couples had before booking. If you are after our service detail, our wedding and occasions page covers it in full.
When to book your stylist
Short answer: as early as you book your venue.
For peak season (December – March), our wedding diary fills 9 – 12 months ahead. For autumn weddings (April – May), 6 – 9 months. Winter weddings still book out 4 – 6 months in advance, especially around the Queenstown Winter Festival.
If your date is locked in and you have not yet secured a stylist, get in touch — we will tell you honestly whether we can fit you in or recommend someone trusted.
When to book your trial
We recommend a trial 6 – 10 weeks before the wedding. Earlier than that and your hair length, colour, or condition can shift. Later than that and there is no time to refine.
A few timing pointers we share with every bride:
- Have your trial after your final pre-wedding colour, so the styling reflects the real tone
- Bring your veil, hair pieces, and a photo of your dress neckline
- Wear a top similar in colour to your dress (white or ivory) — it changes how everything reads
- Take photos in natural light from front, side, and back
Local venues we know well
Each Central Otago venue has its own quirks, and we plan around them. A few notes from experience:
- Rippon, Wanaka — wind off the lake is constant. Soft updos with a hidden grip structure hold better than fully down styles.
- Edgewater & Mount Soho — sheltered enough for half-up styles to last the night
- Wantwood Station — long ceremony walk, golden-hour light, photos run late. Plan styling that holds for 10+ hours.
- Stoneridge Estate — outdoor ceremony, indoor reception. Plan for a midway touch-up.
- The Camp / Glendhu Bay — beach and lake setting, expect breeze. Braided detail keeps hair behaved.
- Helicopter ceremonies (Cecil Peak, Minaret Station) — pin everything. Even sleek low buns need extra grip.
If your venue is not listed, send us a photo or a link and we will tell you what tends to work there.
On-location vs salon styling
Both work. Here is how we help brides choose.
Salon styling suits you if:
- You want a calm, controlled environment
- The wedding party is small (you, mum, one or two bridesmaids)
- Your venue is within 30 minutes of central Wanaka
- You enjoy the ritual of getting ready in the salon
On-location styling suits you if:
- The bridal party is 4+
- The venue is remote or you are staying at a lodge
- You want photos of getting ready in your accommodation
- You prefer not to drive on the morning
We offer both, and the team can travel anywhere from Wanaka through to Glenorchy and Tekapo. On-location is priced per stylist per hour with a travel component.
Hair condition matters more than the style
The single biggest factor in how your wedding hair looks on the day is the condition of your hair leading up to it. Healthy hair holds shape, reflects light, and photographs beautifully. Damaged hair does the opposite — no matter how skilled the stylist.
We recommend starting in-salon treatments 3 – 6 months before the wedding:
- Kerastase Fusio-Dose ritual every 4 – 6 weeks
- A Wellaplex or K18 bond builder added to every colour service
- A Kerastase or Wella mask weekly at home
- Trim every 8 – 10 weeks to keep ends crisp
If your hair is fine or thinning, we often weave temporary tape extensions in 1 – 2 weeks before the day for fullness through the back, then remove them after.
Hair vines, pieces and accessories
Bring everything to the trial. Veils, combs, hair pieces, even fresh florist samples if you can. We will pin everything in place to check it sits comfortably and photographs well.
A few things we have learned the hard way:
- Heavy crystal pieces drag fine hair — we will use a stronger base
- Fresh florals need to be added last and re-misted on the day
- Veils with combs need a specific anchor point — let your stylist know if it goes in or out for the reception
The morning-of timeline we use
For a 3pm ceremony with a bridal party of four, we typically work to:
- 8:00 — bridesmaids start (45 min each)
- 10:30 — mothers / family (30 – 40 min each)
- 11:30 — bride begins
- 1:00 — bride finished, photos start
- 1:30 — touch-ups, veil, breathe
We always build a 30-minute buffer. Weddings rarely run early.
