Bridal Hair Timeline: Planning Your Wedding Day Look in Wanaka

A wedding day deserves more than a last-minute appointment. The brides whose hair sits beautifully from ceremony to last dance almost always followed the same path — planned early, prepared properly, and trialled before the day. Below is the timeline we use with our Wanaka brides.

Six Months Out: Consultation and Direction

This is the right moment to book your first conversation. Not a decision — a direction.

Bring inspiration images, your dress silhouette if you have it, and any thoughts on veil, headpiece or hair accessories. We use this appointment to assess your hair's current condition, density and texture, then talk through what suits both your face shape and the formality of your day.

If your hair is mid-length and you're hoping for an updo, six months is also enough runway to grow safely without losing shape. If you're considering extensions for length or volume on the day, this is when we order and colour-match them.

Three Months Out: Condition and Colour Plan

Healthy hair holds a style. Damaged hair fights it.

We typically begin a course of in-salon treatments and rituals at this point — usually one Kerastase Fusio-Dose every four to six weeks, paired with a tailored at-home regime. If your hair is dry from sun exposure (common for our Wanaka brides who ski, hike or spend summers on the lake), we'll prioritise a moisture-bond treatment combination.

This is also when we map out your colour calendar. The goal is for your final colour to settle for ten to fourteen days before the wedding so it photographs softly rather than freshly toned.

Six Weeks Out: The Bridal Trial

Your trial is the single most important appointment in this timeline. Book it for the same time of day as your ceremony if possible — hair behaves differently in morning humidity than in afternoon heat.

Come with:

  • Clean hair washed the day before (not the morning of)
  • Your veil or headpiece if you have it
  • A top in a similar neckline to your dress
  • Photos of styles you love and styles you don't

We'll run through one or two looks, photograph from every angle, and note exactly what we did so it can be recreated on the day. If something isn't right, we'd far rather discover that now than on the morning.

Two Weeks Out: Final Cut and Colour

This is the window for your final cut and style and any colour refresh. A trim now removes any weight that would soften the shape of an updo, and gives any colour enough time to settle.

We don't recommend trying anything new in this appointment. Same stylist, same shape, same tone. If you want to test a glossing treatment, do it earlier.

The Week Before: Calm, Not Drastic

Drink water. Sleep. Use the masks we sent you home with. Avoid the temptation to wash your hair every day — natural oils will help your style hold.

Two days before the wedding, wash and air-dry without product. Day-one hair is too slippery for most updos; day-two hair holds beautifully.

Day Of: Logistics

Most of our brides book their styling chair at the salon, though we also travel for full bridal parties on request. Either way, here is what we plan:

  • Arrival ninety minutes before your styling slot if you're having makeup with us
  • Bridal styling typically takes 60 to 90 minutes
  • Bridesmaids run 30 to 45 minutes each
  • We always build in a 15-minute buffer before the photographer arrives

If you're getting married at one of the lakefront or vineyard venues outside Wanaka, factor travel and weather into your finish time. Wind is our quiet enemy — we'll send you with a small kit of pins and finishing spray for touch-ups.

A Note on Veils, Headpieces and Florals

Bring them to your trial. We've seen beautifully styled hair go flat the moment a heavier veil is pinned in. If you're wearing fresh florals, send your florist our way — we'll coordinate placement so nothing is fighting for the same spot on your head.
