Ball Hair in Wānaka: A Stylist's Guide to the Big Night (2026)

Ball season in Central Otago comes around fast — and the difference between hair that photographs beautifully at 7pm and hair that's still holding at midnight is preparation, not luck.

Every winter we style ball hair at UKIYO, and every year the same things make the difference. Here's the honest guide — for the girls going, and for the parents booking.

Book earlier than you think

Ball dates cluster, and Wānaka has a handful of salons. The good appointment times on ball weekends go first — if you know your date, book now and you get the afternoon slot instead of 9am (and hair that's fresher by the first photo).

Choosing a style that lasts the whole night

• Soft Hollywood waves — the most requested, and gorgeous — but they're the first style to drop, especially in fine hair. If you want waves, we build them on proper prep (mousse, set, and the right spray) so they last past the dance floor.
• Textured low bun or braided upstyle — the marathon runners. They look better at midnight than they did at 7, and they survive weather, dancing and the van ride.
• Half-up half-down — the best of both if you can't choose: the polish of an upstyle, the length on show.

Bring photos — two or three, not forty. And wear a button-up shirt to your appointment so your dress doesn't meet your finished hair on the way over your head.

The two-week prep that makes hair behave

• Trim and treatment 1–2 weeks before — not the day before. Fresh ends and fed hair curl and hold dramatically better.
• Wash the day before, not the day of. Just-washed hair is too slippery to style. Day-old hair grips.
• If you're colouring for the ball, do it at least a week out so the tone settles and you're not gambling the big night on a same-day result.
