How to Fix Brassy, Orange Hair at Home: A Colourist's Honest Guide

Brass isn't a mystery — it's just warmth showing through as your colour fades or your lightened hair oxidises. And the fix is simple colour theory: you neutralise a tone with its opposite.

The mistake almost everyone makes is grabbing purple shampoo for every kind of brass. Purple only cancels yellow. If your brass is orange, purple will do very little — you need blue. Here's how to tell which you've got and exactly what to use.

Step 1: name your brass

  • Yellow brass — usually blondes and highlights gone warm. Fix: purple.
  • Orange brass — usually brunettes who've lightened, balayage a few months old, or dark hair pulling warm. Fix: blue.
  • Red-orange on dark hair — deep brunettes fading warm. Fix: blue-green territory — honestly, this one's a salon toner job.

Yellow brass: the purple routine

Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet is the purple shampoo we rate highest — strong pigment without the dry, straw feel cheap purple shampoos leave. Use it once or twice a week in place of your normal shampoo. For faster correction, the Ultra-Violet Masque tones and deeply treats at the same time — five minutes, and watch the yellow drop. Redken Blondage is the reliable budget pick (our full review).

Orange brass: the blue fix

Wella Color Fresh Mask in Blue is the one for lightened brunettes gone orange — a genuine blue pigment mask that neutralises orange in ten minutes while conditioning. Nothing in a supermarket does this. If you're a cool blonde wanting to stay icy, Pearl Blonde keeps it silvery; Lilac Frost pushes a fashionable cool-violet gloss.

How to use toning products without going too far

  • Start with less contact time than the jar says. You can always tone more; over-toned takes weeks to fade.
  • Apply to clean, towel-dried hair, comb through evenly — patchy application is patchy toning.
  • Porous ends grab pigment fastest. Apply there last.
  • Wear gloves with the Color Fresh masks. They mean it.

When to stop and book a toner instead

If your brass came on suddenly after a colour, if it's uneven, or if you're fighting deep orange on dark hair — that's a 20-minute in-salon toner and it will do what no at-home product can. It's also the honest answer if you've been toning at home for a month and it's not winning. Book a gloss & tone, or ask us at your next appointment which shade family your hair is actually fighting.
