Why a Colour Consultation Matters Before Your First Appointment

We offer every new colour client a complimentary 15-minute consultation before their first appointment, and we recommend it without fail. It is not a sales pitch and it is not a formality. It is, genuinely, the most important fifteen minutes of the entire colour process.

Here is why we do it, what we cover, and what you can expect.

Why we never skip the consultation

Hair is unpredictable. Two clients can sit in the chair on the same morning with what looks like the same shade of brunette, and respond completely differently to the same lightener. Their hair history, porosity, condition, regrowth pattern and even their water at home all influence the result.

A consultation lets us see your hair in person, in proper salon light, before we commit to a plan. It also lets you meet the stylist, see the space, ask questions, and decide whether we are the right fit for you. No pressure either way.

What we actually assess

A good consultation is methodical. In our chair, we work through:

Hair history

We will ask about every chemical service your hair has had in the last two years — box dye, henna, previous lightening, perms, keratin treatments, anything. This is not nosiness. Some products leave residues that affect how your hair lifts, and we would much rather know about them before we mix colour than discover them halfway through your appointment.

Condition and porosity

We will run our hands through your hair, look at the ends, and check how the cuticle is sitting. Porous hair grabs colour faster and fades faster. Healthy, smooth hair holds tone longer and behaves more predictably. Both are workable — but the plan is different for each.

Lifestyle and routine

How often you wash, what products you use, whether you swim or ski, how much heat styling you do, whether you sit in the sun — all of it shapes the longevity of your colour. A balayage that suits a client who washes twice a week is not the same balayage we would design for someone who washes daily.

Goals — and what is realistic

This is where we have the most honest conversation of the appointment. You tell us where you want to go, we tell you what is achievable in one sitting versus over a series of appointments, and together we build a plan that gets you there without compromising your hair.

If you are coming in with a balayage inspiration photo, we will talk through tone, placement, maintenance and cost before you book. If you are after a brighter blonde, we will be straight with you about how many sessions it might take and how to look after it in between.

Why the consultation is free

We do not charge for consultations because we believe the right colour decision is too important to put a price on. We would rather you walk away and think about it for a week than feel rushed into a service you are not sure about.

It also means we never start an appointment with a brief we are not confident in. Both sides win.

What to bring

You do not need much:

  • A few inspiration photos if you have them (Instagram saves are fine)
  • An honest sense of your budget and how much maintenance you are willing to commit to
  • Any product you are currently using at home, if you are not sure of the name
  • Questions — bring as many as you like

If your hair has had recent chemical work, come with damp or freshly washed hair so we can see its true condition without product build-up.

What happens after the consultation

By the end of the fifteen minutes, you should leave with:

  • A clear plan for your first appointment, including which service and how long it will take
  • An honest cost estimate
  • A sense of how many appointments it might take to reach your end goal
  • A short list of products to start using at home, if relevant
  • A booked appointment, if you are ready

If you would prefer to think about it overnight, that is completely fine. We will send through your plan in writing and you can come back to us when you are ready.

A note on full colour services

For clients booking a full colour, balayage or correction service, the consultation also lets us flag whether a strand test is needed before the appointment. Strand tests are a small extra step that can save a significant amount of time and money on the day, particularly for clients with previously coloured or chemically treated hair.

We will tell you on the spot whether one is recommended.
