Most clients come to us asking for "extensions" without knowing there's a meaningful choice to make. The two systems we use most often — tape-in and micro ring — behave very differently in real life. Here is the honest comparison we'd give you across the chair.
The Quick Summary
If you want length and volume in under two hours, with the lowest visual footprint and easiest blending — tape extensions. If you want longer wear between appointments, no adhesive, and the ability to be more relaxed with heat and oil-based products — micro rings.
Now the detail.
Tape-In Extensions
Tape extensions are flat wefts of hair sandwiched either side of your natural hair using a medical-grade adhesive panel. They sit completely flat against the scalp, which makes them invisible under a partline and comfortable to sleep in.
Application
Application takes around one to two hours depending on how many wefts we use. There's no heat, no tools pulling at the scalp, and no beads. We can usually do a full head in a single appointment.
Maintenance
Tapes need to be moved up — re-taped — every six to eight weeks as your natural hair grows out. The hair itself can usually be reused two to three times before it needs replacing, which keeps ongoing cost down.
The trade-off: oil-based products near the root will compromise the adhesive. That means switching to a sulphate-free, oil-free shampoo and being mindful with conditioner application.
Best for
Fine to medium hair that needs both length and density. They lay so flat that even very fine hair carries them well. Not the best choice for very oily scalps or anyone who can't change their product routine.
Micro Ring Extensions
Micro rings (sometimes called nano rings, beaded wefts or i-tip) attach individual or weft strands to your natural hair with a small silicone-lined metal ring, clamped flat with a specialist tool. No glue, no heat.
Application
Application is slower — typically two to three hours for a full head — because each ring is placed by hand. The first appointment feels longer, but there's no chemistry involved.
Maintenance
Most clients come back every eight to ten weeks for a re-fit, which means fewer salon visits across the year. The hair itself, looked after well, can last nine to twelve months.
You can use any product range you like, including oil-based serums and masks. That's the biggest practical advantage for clients with dry ends — common in our Wanaka climate.
Best for
Medium to thick hair that holds the ring securely. Not ideal for very fine hair, where the rings can occasionally show through a partline. Excellent for clients who want a "fit and forget" system between appointments.
Cost: An Honest Range
We won't quote exact figures here because the right number depends on the weight of hair you need, the length, and whether we're starting fresh or moving up an existing set. As a guide, expect a meaningful investment up front and a smaller maintenance fee at each move-up appointment. We always quote in writing after your consultation so there are no surprises.
The longer-term picture matters more than the first-day price. Tape hair generally needs replacing sooner; micro ring hair lasts longer but the up-front fit is a longer appointment. Across a full year, both systems usually land in a similar range when the hair is properly cared for.
Removal
Both systems can be removed cleanly in salon. Tape is dissolved with a gentle remover; rings are opened with the same tool used to fit them. Neither should ever be pulled out at home, no matter what TikTok suggests — this is where most extension damage actually happens.
What We'd Ask You
Before we recommend a system, we want to know:
- How fine or thick is your natural hair?
- How much heat styling do you do at home?
- Are you willing to change shampoo, or do you have a routine you love?
- Are you wanting more length, more volume, or both?
- How often, realistically, can you get to a maintenance appointment?
Your answers usually point clearly to one or the other. We always include a full extension consultation before quoting and ordering, and we colour-match against your real hair, not a swatch chart.
You can read more about both systems on our extensions page, or pair an extension fit with one of our in-salon treatments and rituals to keep the hair in best condition between appointments. Most extension clients also book a regular cut and style every six to eight weeks to keep the blend seamless.
