Grey Blending: The Softer Way to Go Grey (Or Not Yet) — A Colourist's Guide

There are two hard ways to deal with grey: keep covering it every four weeks forever, or stop cold and live with a stripe for a year. Grey blending is the third way — and it's the best thing to happen to silver hair in a decade.

What grey blending actually is

Instead of blanket-covering your grey, your colourist weaves fine highlights and lowlights through it, softening the contrast between your natural silver and your coloured lengths. The regrowth line disappears — because there's no longer a hard line to grow out. You can use it two ways:

To transition to grey — blending lets your silver come through gradually and deliberately, so you grow out years of colour without a single awkward month.
To keep your colour, less often — blending stretches appointments from four weeks to eight, ten or twelve, because regrowth stops being visible the week after your colour.

Why silver hair goes yellow (and the fix)

Grey hair has no pigment to hide behind, so it shows everything — UV, minerals in the water, heat styling all push white hair towards yellow.
