Redken Extreme NZ: Repair for Damaged, Breaking Hair
Redken Extreme is for hair that has stopped being just dry and started actually breaking — snapping mid-length, fraying at the ends, looking thinner than it should. It is a strengthening range, not a moisture one, and that distinction matters.
We see a lot of damaged hair: blonde that has been pushed, box dye gone wrong, years of straighteners, or just fine hair that gives up easily. Extreme is the range I trust to make fragile hair tougher while you grow the damage out. Here is what is in it and how to use it without wasting product.
The hero: Anti-Snap
Redken Extreme Anti-Snap is the leave-in treatment the range is famous for, and for good reason. It coats and fortifies fragile lengths so they bend instead of break, and it gives heat protection on top. A few sprays through damp hair before drying genuinely reduces breakage you can see in the basin. If you only buy one thing from Extreme, buy this.
The wash and treat routine
Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner cleanse gently and reinforce the hair with proteins so it feels stronger straight away. The Extreme Mask is the deep weekly treatment for badly compromised hair — leave it on 5-10 minutes when your hair feels at its worst.
Extreme CAT is the cult one stylists quietly love — a rinse-out protein treatment for hair that is very over-processed or porous. Used once a week it rebuilds resilience, but go easy: too much protein on already-stiff hair can make it feel brittle, so alternate it with a moisture week. Extreme Play Safe is the daily leave-in for length-keepers, smoothing and protecting as you grow.
How to get it right
- Protein needs balance. Use the strengthening treatments, but keep a moisture conditioner or oil in rotation so hair stays flexible, not stiff.
- Always heat-protect. Anti-Snap or Play Safe before any hot tool — damaged hair has no margin for extra heat.
- Trims still matter. Products strengthen the hair you have; they cannot reattach a split end. A regular dust keeps breakage from travelling up.
Extreme or All Soft?
Simple rule: if your hair is breaking, choose Extreme. If it is just dry and rough but structurally fine, choose All Soft. We break the whole decision down in All Soft vs Extreme. For serious bond damage from bleach, also compare our bond-building guide.
