Perimenopause & Menopause Hair Changes: A Stylist's Guide (NZ)

Somewhere in your 40s or 50s your hair can quietly become a different animal — thinner on top, drier, more wiry, slower to grow, harder to style. It's not you doing something wrong. It's hormones, and there's a lot we can do about it.

This is one of the most common — and least talked about — things women bring to the chair. So here's the honest stylist guide to what's happening and how to work with it.

What menopause does to hair

As oestrogen falls through perimenopause and menopause, three things tend to happen: density drops (especially at the part, crown and hairline), each strand gets finer, and texture changes — hair often goes drier, coarser or more wiry as oil production shifts and grey comes through. Growth can slow too. It can happen gradually or feel like it arrived overnight.

Cut and colour that work with it

  • Cut for density, not length. Very long, fine lengths emphasise thinness. A cut with soft layers, a considered shape and often a little less length reads as much fuller. This is the biggest instant win.
  • Consider grey blending. Fighting regrowth every four weeks is exhausting, and harsh all-over colour can stress fragile hair. Blending your grey softens the upkeep and looks modern — full guide on grey blending here.
  • Feed the new texture. Wiry, grey-coming-through hair needs moisture and gentle care, not more heat.

The products that genuinely help

Kérastase Densifique is built for menopausal density — it thickens the feel of each strand and adds visible body. Pair it with the Genesis Anti-Chute Sérum to support the scalp and reduce breakage-driven loss. For dry, mature, stressed hair, Chronologiste is the luxury regenerating step that makes coarse hair feel soft and cared-for again. If your scalp has become oily or sensitive with the change, Spécifique balances it. None of these are drugs — but consistently, they keep more hair on your head and make what you have look and feel better.

Worth knowing

Haircare supports the hair you have; it can't override hormones. If your thinning is significant or patchy, it's worth talking to your GP — HRT, iron and thyroid all affect hair, and there are medical options. There's no shame in asking; a lot of women do.
