Hair Extensions for Short Hair: Can You? An Honest Guide

Short hair and extensions can work together more often than people expect — we do it regularly — but there's an honest line between hair that's ready now and hair that needs a little more length first. If you've got a bob you're trying to grow, or a previous cut that's sitting awkwardly, extensions can genuinely help. The trick is knowing when to start and how much to add.

Can you actually put extensions in short hair?

Yes, you often can. What decides it isn't a hard number. It comes down to whether your own hair can do two jobs: anchor the tab or weft securely, and cover it so nothing shows. If your hair is too short to hide the attachment, you'll see a join or feel a shelf, and no amount of skill fixes that. So the first question we ask isn't "what length do you want" — it's "what have we got to work with."

The honest minimum length

As a rough guide, your hair needs to reach somewhere around your chin to your collarbone before extensions sit and blend properly. That's a starting point rather than a rule, because everyone's density, layers and growth pattern are different, so we assess it in person rather than over a screen. Very short layers around the face are the fiddly part and need careful placement, which is exactly the sort of thing we look at during a consult. Blending is everything

This is where most of the work happens. We don't just clip in length and send you off — we cut and layer the extensions into your own hair so there's no visible shelf or hard line where yours stops and the extension starts. We also colour-match to your ends, not your roots, so the lengths read as natural. Both tape-in hair extensions in Wānaka and hand-tied methods work on shorter hair; which one suits you depends on your hair type and how much you're adding.

Go gradual, not dramatic

The most common mistake we see is going too long, too fast from very short hair. It looks unnatural and it's hard to blend, because the gap between your length and the added length just doesn't sit right. We'd rather add a moderate amount now and build up over a couple of fittings as your own hair grows underneath. It's a slower path, but it looks like your hair the whole way through.

Great for growing out

If you're growing out a bob, evening up a grow-out, or recovering from a cut you didn't love, extensions are genuinely useful here. They add fullness and length while your own hair catches up, so the in-between stage is far less frustrating. Even bobs and lobs can take a discreet set just for body, if extra length isn't the goal. When to wait

Sometimes the honest answer is "not quite yet." If your hair won't cover the attachment, we'll tell you straight, and we'll usually give you a plan: what to grow, how to look after it, and when to come back. A few weeks of length can be the difference between a result that looks obvious and one that looks like it grew out of your own head.
