Permanent Hair Extensions in NZ: What the Term Really Means

If you've searched "permanent hair extensions" you're probably picturing length and thickness that stays put. Here's the honest version: the methods we fit at UKIYO aren't literally permanent. They're salon-applied, semi-permanent extensions worn for weeks at a time, then lifted and repositioned as your own hair grows. "Permanent" is just the word most people reach for, so let's clear it up and walk through the three methods we offer in Wānaka.

What "permanent hair extensions" really means

The phrase covers any extensions a stylist fits in the salon, as opposed to clip-ins you put in and take out yourself. They stay in through washing, sleeping and the gym, and they last weeks rather than a single night. But none of them are forever. Every few weeks they need a move-up, where we take them out, tidy your hair and refit them higher to follow your regrowth. So "long-wearing and removable" is closer to the truth than "permanent". Tape-in extensions

Tape-ins are slim wefts that sit in a thin sandwich, taped on each side of a fine section of your own hair. No heat, no beads, no glue gun. They're the flattest and most discreet method we do, they sit close to the scalp, and they're usually the gentlest on your hair. A full set takes roughly one to two hours, and they tend to be the lowest entry cost of the three. We reach for tape-ins most often on fine to medium hair. Move-ups are every six to eight weeks. Micro-ring and nano-ring extensions

The micro-ring method (and the finer nano-ring version) secures strands or small wefts with a tiny silicone-lined ring that's clamped onto your hair. There's no glue and no heat anywhere in the process, which is why people who want to steer clear of adhesive tend to choose it. You can use any products you like, including oils right down to the root. As your hair grows we simply open the rings and slide them back up. Nano-rings use a smaller bead, so they're the better pick for finer hair where you don't want anything bulky showing through.

Hand-tied wefts

Hand-tied wefts are a continuous weft sewn onto a fine row of beads that runs across the back of your head. Because the hair sits in a flat row rather than individual pieces, it's the most natural to wear and the best way to add real, even density. This is the method for medium to thick hair that wants genuine fullness. It takes the longest to fit, and it often gives the longest stretch between move-ups, usually eight to twelve weeks.

What about fusion and keratin bonds?

You'll see "fusion", "keratin bond" or "pre-bonded" extensions described as permanent elsewhere, and they do exist. We've chosen not to offer them, because we'd rather work with gentler, fully removable methods that are kinder to your own hair over the long run.
