Keratin, Brazilian Blowout or Smoothing? Which NZ Frizz Treatment Suits You
If you spend twenty minutes fighting frizz every morning, a salon smoothing treatment can genuinely change your life — but the names are a minefield, and some of what's out there isn't great for your hair. Here's the honest version.
"Keratin treatment", "Brazilian blowout", "smoothing treatment" — people use these interchangeably and they're not the same. Here's what each actually does, so you can book the right one.
What they have in common
All of them are semi-permanent, in-salon treatments that reduce frizz, cut down drying time, and add smoothness and shine for a few months. They work by sealing a smoothing agent into the hair with heat, then it gradually washes out — it grows and fades out rather than leaving a hard line. None of them permanently straightens (that's a different, more aggressive process).
The differences that matter
- Keratin treatment — the umbrella term. Bonds a keratin-based smoothing agent into the hair. Great for frizz and mild wave; leaves hair smoother but with movement. Results typically last 2–4 months.
- Brazilian blowout — a specific brand/method, generally the strongest of the smoothing family. More dramatic frizz-elimination; historically some formulas used harsher chemistry — always ask what's in it.
- Modern salon smoothing (e.g. Wella) — the newer generation, formulated to be gentler and formaldehyde-free while still killing frizz and cutting styling time. This is the direction good salons have moved.
The honest bit: are they safe?
The reputation problems came from older formulas that released formaldehyde with heat. The treatments a reputable NZ salon uses today are formaldehyde-free and, used correctly on suitable hair, do not damage it — in fact, less daily heat styling afterwards is often better for your hair overall. The key is a skilled stylist, a good formula, and honest advice about whether your hair actually suits it. If someone won't tell you what's in the product, walk away.
What it costs and how long it lasts
Smoothing treatments are a time-and-product service, so they sit in the higher band of a salon menu — but amortised over 3–4 months of easy mornings, most people feel they're worth it. Aftercare matters: use a sulphate-free, smoothing shampoo to protect the result (harsh shampoos strip it out faster).
Who it suits
Frizz-prone, wavy, thick or humidity-sensitive hair benefits most. If your hair is fine and flat, smoothing can leave it lifeless — a targeted anti-frizz routine may serve you better (see our frizz guide). Not sure? That's what a consult is for.
Aftercare + the at-home alternative
To keep a treatment looking good, we send clients home with the Wella Ultimate Smooth range and a heat-protectant. And if you're not ready for the salon commitment, Color Wow Dream Coat is the closest at-home frizz-proofer — it waterproofs the hair against humidity for days. Shop the smoothing edit below.
