Purple shampoo: how often, how long, and which one for your blonde

Purple shampoo: how often, how long, and which one for your blonde
blondesMay 9, 20262 min read

Most blondes use purple shampoo wrong. Either too often, too long, or with the wrong intensity for their tone.

Here's the actual rhythm we run on UKIYO clients in Wānaka — and the three products we trust to do it.

How often

Once a week is enough for almost every blonde. The exceptions:

  • Swim regularly in chlorine: twice a week
  • Spending heavy time in the sun: twice a week through summer
  • Just left the salon with cool-toned balayage: skip it for the first 2 weeks (your stylist already toned)

Going harder than that strips moisture and over-cools the hair. Ash-blonde is great. Concrete-blonde isn't.

How long to leave it in

Strong purple shampoo: 2-3 minutes max. Lather, leave, rinse.

If you've never toned at home before, start with 1 minute. You can always add time. You can't take pigment back out once it's gripped.

Cool tap water rinse. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets pigment over-deposit.

Which one

Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Ultra Violet — the most pigmented purple shampoo Kérastase makes. We reach for this on cool blondes, ash blondes, and clients fighting brassiness post-summer. Shop it here.

For warm blondes that don't want to lose warmth: skip purple, use a colour-safe shampoo like Kérastase Bain Satin Riche.

For dramatic platinum: daily purple shampoo is still wrong. Use Bain Ultra Violet twice a week, alternated with deep conditioner days.

What purple shampoo isn't

It isn't moisturising. It isn't repairing. It isn't going to lighten your hair. The single job is to deposit cool violet pigment to neutralise unwanted yellow tones.

Pair it with a hydrating mask or repair conditioner like Cicaflash Fondant on the same week (different day) to handle the dryness.

The stylist's note

If your blonde looks dull, dry, or like it's lost depth — purple shampoo isn't the answer. That's a moisture and damage problem. Hydrate first, tone second.

If your blonde is yellow, brassy, or wants to be cooler — that's the only situation purple shampoo is built for.

FAQ

Why does purple shampoo cancel yellow? Colour theory. Purple is opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so violet pigment neutralises yellow tones. Kérastase's own explanation.

Can purple shampoo damage my hair? Most purple shampoos are slightly drying because of the cleansing surfactants and the prolonged contact time. Counter with conditioner or mask in the same week.

Will it lighten my hair? No. It tones, doesn't lift.

Should I use purple shampoo on grey hair? Yes — purple shampoo is great for keeping grey/silver hair clean-toned and avoiding the yellow that environmental factors deposit.
