Best Dry Shampoo NZ (2026): Every One We Stock, Ranked

Dry shampoo is the most misused product in most bathrooms — and the difference between a good one and a supermarket one is bigger than almost any other product we sell.

Used right, dry shampoo buys you a day (or two) between washes, saves your colour from over-washing, and gives fine hair the best root texture it will ever have. Used wrong — or bought cheap — it's white cast, gritty roots and an itchy scalp. Here's every dry shampoo we keep in the salon, ranked, and exactly how to use them.

How we judge them

Four things: does it disappear into the hair (no white cast), how much oil it actually absorbs, how it makes roots feel by evening, and whether it builds up over consecutive days. Scent matters too — you wear it all day.

The ranking

1. Kérastase Fresh Affair — the premium pick and honestly the nicest dry shampoo we've used. Micro-fine rice starch that vanishes into the hair, a genuinely beautiful neroli scent, and roots that still feel like hair (not powder) at 6pm. If you use dry shampoo most days, this is the one that won't punish you for it.

2. Redken Invisible — does what the name says. The most truly transparent finish of the group, which makes it the safe pick for dark hair. Great oil absorption on a working budget. (We compared it head-to-head with Sebastian here.)

3. Sebastian Dynamic+ — the stylist's pick when you want texture as well as freshness. It absorbs oil and leaves grip that makes flat, next-day hair actually style better. If you dry-shampoo before you tong or braid, choose this.

4. EVO Water Killer — cult favourite, straight-talking formula, brilliant everyday workhorse with a light rice-starch feel. EVO's sense of humour on the can is a bonus.

5. Wella EIMI Dry Me — the value salon option. Lighter absorption than the top picks but a soft, matte, believable finish. Good starter dry shampoo.

6. Angel Verbena — the gentle, botanical option for sensitive scalps that react to conventional aerosols.

How to actually use dry shampoo

  • Distance is everything: 25-30cm from the head. Closer = white cast and wet-feeling patches, no matter the brand.
  • Lift sections and spray at the roots, not over the top layer.
  • Wait 60 seconds before touching — it needs time to absorb oil.
  • Then massage through with fingertips or brush out. This is the step everyone skips, and it's what removes any residue.
  • Best trick we teach: apply at night before bed. It works while you sleep and you wake up with clean-feeling roots.

When dry shampoo is the wrong answer

If your roots are greasy by the end of day one, every day, dry shampoo is a patch — the fix is your washing routine. Start with our oily-hair shampoo guide and how often you should actually wash your hair. And every few weeks, use a clarifying wash so dry-shampoo build-up doesn't dull your colour.
