How Often Should You Wash Your Hair? A Stylist's Honest Answer

It is one of the most common questions we hear at the basin, and the honest answer is that how often you should wash your hair depends entirely on your hair type, your scalp, and your lifestyle. There is no universal number. Anyone who tells you "every three days" without looking at your hair is guessing.

What we can do is give you a clear way to work out your own frequency. After years on the salon floor in Wanaka, we have a simple framework that gets most people to the right rhythm within a fortnight.

Start with your scalp, not your hair

Washing is about your scalp far more than your lengths. The oil that makes hair look greasy comes from the sebaceous glands at the root. Your ends do not get oily, they get dry. So the real question is how quickly your scalp produces visible oil.

  • Oily scalp, fine hair: you will likely need to wash every one to two days. Fine hair shows oil fast because each strand is thin and there is less surface area to absorb it.
  • Normal scalp, medium hair: every two to three days suits most people in this group.
  • Dry scalp, thick or coarse hair: you can often stretch to every four to five days, sometimes longer. Coarse and curly hair holds its shape and hides oil well.
  • Curly and textured hair: over-washing is the bigger risk here. Washing too often strips the natural oils curls need, which leads to dryness and breakage.

The over-washing trap

Here is the part most people get wrong. If you wash every day because your hair feels greasy by the afternoon, you may actually be training your scalp to produce more oil. Stripping the scalp daily can prompt it to overcompensate.

We often coach clients to gently stretch their washing frequency. Move from daily to every second day, then to every third. It takes two to three weeks for the scalp to settle, and dry shampoo is your friend in that transition. The result is usually a calmer scalp that holds a clean look for longer.

When you genuinely should wash more often

Frequency is not a moral test. Some weeks you simply need to wash more, and that is fine:

  • After heavy exercise, when sweat sits on the scalp
  • After swimming, especially in chlorinated pools or the lake
  • During Central Otago summer when dust and UV build up quickly
  • If you use a lot of styling product that needs clearing
