Scalp Health Is the New Skincare: A Stylist's Guide to Scalp Scrubs (NZ)
You wouldn't build a skincare routine and ignore the skin under your hair — but that's exactly what most of us do. Your scalp is skin, and healthy hair genuinely starts there.
"Scalp skinification" is the trend, but the idea is old and true: treat your scalp like the skin on your face and your hair grows in better, looks fuller, and behaves. Here's the stylist version, minus the hype.
Why the scalp matters more than your shampoo
Every hair grows out of a follicle in your scalp. If that scalp is congested with product buildup, dead skin, excess oil or flaking, follicles get clogged, hair can grow in weaker, and the roots go greasy faster. A lot of "my hair is oily / flat / itchy" problems are actually scalp problems. Fix the soil and the plant grows better.
The signs your scalp needs attention
- Roots greasy within a day, even with the right shampoo.
- Itch, tightness, or flaking (dry flakes vs oily flakes are treated differently — see our dandruff guide).
- Hair looks flat and lifeless at the root.
- Buildup you can feel — a film or grit when you run fingers over your scalp.
The routine: exfoliate, balance, treat
1. Exfoliate weekly. A scalp scrub or peeling treatment lifts buildup and dead skin so everything else works better. Kérastase Symbiose Micro-Peeling Cellulaire is our pick — a weekly scalp exfoliant that clears congestion without stripping. This is the single most underrated step in most people's routine.
2. Balance the wash. Match your shampoo to your scalp, not your ends. Oily scalp → Spécifique Bain Divalent balances oil at the root while keeping lengths comfortable. Flaky → a Symbiose anti-flake bain.
3. Treat the scalp directly. Scalp serums (like the Nutritive scalp serum or Potentialiste) go onto the scalp itself to soothe, strengthen and support density — the same way a face serum works on your skin.
The "scalp facial" — worth booking
An in-salon scalp treatment (think a deep-cleanse, exfoliation, massage and targeted serum) is having a real moment — and it's genuinely lovely and genuinely useful, especially if you've got stubborn buildup, an oily or flaky scalp, or you just want a reset. It also feels incredible. Ask us about adding a scalp treatment to your next appointment.
Don't forget the water
If you're in Central Otago, mineral buildup from hard water congests the scalp too — a decalcifying wash pairs perfectly with a scalp routine. Shop the scalp edit below, or book a scalp treatment at UKIYO.
