Copper Hair in NZ: Shades, Maintenance & What It Really Takes
Copper is having a huge moment — and for good reason, it's warm, striking and flattering on more people than you'd think. But it's also the fastest-fading colour there is, so here's the honest colourist brief before you commit.
Copper (and its cousins — ginger, cinnamon, cowboy copper, strawberry) is one of the most-requested colours right now. Done right and maintained properly, it's stunning. Done without a plan, it fades to a sad brassy-orange in a month. The difference is entirely in the aftercare.
Finding your copper
- Cool / muted copper — softer, more terracotta; flatters fair, cool skin tones.
- Bright / true copper — vivid and warm; gorgeous on medium tones and green/hazel eyes.
- Cowboy copper — copper with lived-in darker roots; lower maintenance because regrowth blends.
- Strawberry / rose copper — softest, blends copper with blonde; a gentle way in.
Naturally darker? Getting to bright copper means lifting first, so it's more of a process. Your colourist will map a realistic path at consultation.
The honest truth about maintenance
Copper and red molecules are the largest colour molecules, so they sit closer to the surface and wash out fastest of any shade. Expect visible fade within a few weeks if you don't protect it. That's not a reason to avoid copper — it's a reason to commit to the aftercare. People who love their copper are the ones who topped it up at home.
The routine that keeps copper alive
- A copper colour-depositing treatment is non-negotiable — it re-deposits pigment every few washes so your colour never gets the chance to fade flat. evo Fabuloso Copper and Wella Color Fresh Copper Glow are the two we hand every copper client. Use once or twice a week in place of conditioner.
- A colour-protect shampoo — Kérastase Chroma Absolu or Redken Color Extend Magnetics — to slow fade and hold shine.
- Wash less, cooler. Every wash pulls copper out. Stretch your washes (dry shampoo helps) and rinse cool.
- Heat protect. Heat oxidises warm tones faster — Chroma Thermique before hot tools.
What it costs
A fashion copper is a colour service plus ongoing at-home top-ups. Cost depends on your starting point (natural mid-brown to copper is quick; dark or previously-coloured to bright copper is a bigger job). Factor the depositing treatment into your budget — it's what protects the money you spent in the chair.
