How to Make Hair Colour Last Longer: A Colourist's Guide

You have invested time and money in a colour you love, so the obvious question is how to make hair colour last longer so you get every possible week out of it. The good news is that fading is largely within your control. Most colour does not fail, it fades, and it fades because of habits at home rather than anything that happened in the salon chair.

Here is the colourist's guide to protecting your colour, used by our team and shared with every colour client.

Wait before your first wash

The first rule starts the moment you leave the salon. After colouring, the cuticle layer of your hair is still slightly open and the colour is still settling. Washing too soon rinses freshly deposited pigment straight back out.

Wait at least 48 to 72 hours before your first shampoo. The longer you can hold off, the better the colour locks in. If your hair feels oily in that window, a light dry shampoo bridges the gap cleanly.

Wash less often, and cooler

Every wash is an opportunity for colour to fade. Two simple changes make a noticeable difference:

  • Wash less frequently. Limiting washing to two or three times a week dramatically slows fading. Dry shampoo helps you stretch the gaps.
  • Use cooler water. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets pigment escape. Wash and especially rinse with cool or lukewarm water. A cool final rinse seals the cuticle and locks colour in.

Use colour-safe shampoo and conditioner

This is non-negotiable for coloured hair. A colour-safe shampoo cleanses gently, without the harsh detergents that strip pigment out alongside the dirt. Switching from a stripping supermarket shampoo to a proper colour-protecting one is one of the single biggest things you can do for colour longevity.

Our colour-treated hair collection covers shampoos and conditioners formulated specifically to protect colour. Brands such as Redken Color Extend, in our Redken Color Extend collection, and Kerastase Chroma Absolu, in the Kerastase Chroma Absolu collection, are ranges we trust and use on colour clients.

Condition and treat, every time

Coloured hair is more porous than virgin hair, which means it loses both moisture and pigment more easily. Conditioning closes and smooths the cuticle, which traps colour molecules inside and slows fading.

Condition every time you wash, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Add a weekly mask from our masks and treatments collection to keep the cuticle healthy and sealed. Well-conditioned hair simply holds colour better, and it looks glossier, which makes colour read as more vibrant.

Protect colour from heat and sun

Heat and UV are two of the biggest causes of fading.

  • Always use a heat protectant before blow-drying or straightening, and keep your tools at a moderate temperature. Excess heat fades and dulls colour as well as damaging hair.
  • Shield colour from the sun. UV oxidises and lifts colour, and Central Otago summers bring intense UV. Wear a hat outdoors, and use a leave-in product with UV protection when you are out for long stretches.

Mind the water you swim in

Chlorine and salt water are hard on coloured hair. Chlorine in particular can dull colour and, on blonde or lightened hair, push it towards an unwanted tone.

Before swimming, wet your hair thoroughly with clean water, hair already full of fresh water absorbs far less pool water. Better still, apply a little conditioner or oil as a barrier first. Rinse straight after swimming and condition that evening.

Tone between visits if you are blonde or cool-toned

Blonde and cool-toned colours fade towards warmth and brassiness. A purple or blue-toned shampoo, used roughly once a week, deposits a little cool pigment to counteract that and keeps the tone looking fresh between salon visits. Do not overuse it, once a week is plenty for most people, and pair it with a hydrating product so the hair does not dry out.

Book your refresh before the colour fully fades

Finally, the best way to keep colour looking its best is not to let it get to the desperate stage. Booking a refresh or toner appointment at the right interval, rather than waiting until the colour has fully gone, keeps your hair looking consistently good and often makes each appointment quicker and gentler.

Our colourists at UKIYO in Wanaka will tell you honestly how long your particular colour should last and the best rhythm for refreshes. Call 03 443 1040 or book online.

The colourist's summary

You make hair colour last longer by waiting before the first wash, washing less often and in cooler water, switching to colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, treating weekly with a mask, protecting from heat and sun, being smart around chlorine, and toning between visits if you are blonde. None of it is complicated, and together it can add weeks of vibrancy to every colour appointment.

FAQ

How long should I wait to wash my hair after colouring? Wait at least 48 to 72 hours. The cuticle is still settling, and washing too soon rinses freshly deposited pigment out. The longer you can wait, the better the colour locks in.

Does colour-safe shampoo really make a difference? Yes. Colour-safe shampoos use gentler cleansing agents that do not strip pigment the way harsh detergents do. Switching to one is among the most effective changes you can make for colour longevity.

Why does my hair colour fade so fast? Common causes are washing too often, hot water, harsh shampoo, heat styling without protection, sun exposure and chlorine. Coloured hair is also more porous, so it loses pigment more easily without good conditioning.

How often should I get my colour refreshed? It depends on the colour, your hair and how visible regrowth is, but most clients refresh every six to ten weeks. Your colourist can give you a precise interval and the best toner schedule for your colour.
