Sebastian Hairsprays: Re-Shaper vs Zero Gravity vs Fierce

Sebastian make three hairsprays, and the right one depends entirely on how much hold you want and whether you need to brush through it afterwards. Re-Shaper is strong and brushable. Zero Gravity is light and invisible. Fierce is maximum hold that doesn't move. Most people want Re-Shaper.

Sebastian's hairsprays are the reason a lot of stylists first fell for the brand — Re-Shaper in particular has been on salon trolleys for decades because it does the thing no supermarket spray does: holds properly and still brushes out. Here's how the three compare, plus the two finishing sprays people confuse them with.

Which Sebastian hairspray should I buy?

Re-Shaper: the one to start with

Re-Shaper is Sebastian's classic strong-hold hairspray, and the one we use most in the salon. Its trick is that it holds firmly but stays brushable — you can spray, let it dry, then run a brush through and re-style without the crunch or the white flakes. That's what makes it an everyday spray rather than an event spray. It dries fast, doesn't leave hair sticky, and a can lasts a long time because you don't need much.

Use it 20–30cm from the hair in short passes, on dry hair. Spraying too close is what gives people the wet, stiff patch.

Shaper Zero Gravity: for hair you don't want to feel

Zero Gravity is the light-hold version. It gives soft, flexible hold with genuinely no weight and no visible product — the finish is invisible. It's the right spray for fine hair that collapses under anything heavier, for loose waves you want to stay loose, and for anyone who's been put off hairspray by feeling it in their hair. If Re-Shaper is too much for you, this is the answer.

Shaper Fierce: when it must not move

Fierce is the maximum-hold styling spray. Once it's set, it's set — this is the one for updos, bridal hair, a night in a humid room, or a fringe that needs to survive a Central Otago nor'wester. It isn't a brush-out spray; you shape first, then lock it. Used on the whole head every day it'll feel like a helmet, which is not what it's for.

Shine Define and Texture Maker are not hairsprays

Two other Sebastian sprays sit on the same shelf and get bought by mistake.

Shine Define is a satin-shine styling spray — light hold with a glossy finish. Use it as a final mist over a finished style for polish, not for hold.

Texture Maker is a matte texture spray — the opposite: it dulls shine and adds grit for lived-in, undone hair. It gives some hold but you buy it for the texture. If you want beachy, piecey hair, this is the one; if you want a set style, it isn't.

How to use hairspray without wrecking your hair

• Dry hair only. Hairspray on damp hair goes gummy.
• Hold the can 20–30cm away and keep it moving. Most "stiff, crunchy" complaints are from spraying too close.
• Spray the underneath and the roots for lift; spray the top for hold. They're different jobs.
• Brush it out at night. Sleeping in a full head of spray dries the hair out.
• A heat protectant goes on before styling; hairspray goes on after. Never spray then iron — that's what sizzles.
