Sebastian NO.BREAKER vs Olaplex: A Stylist's Honest Comparison

Both work. Olaplex is the famous one with a standalone hero treatment; Sebastian NO.BREAKER is the complete five-step routine that's easier to live with day to day and lighter on fine hair. If you want one bottle to add to what you already use, Olaplex No.3 is the simpler buy. If you want your whole wash routine to be doing the repair, NO.BREAKER is the better system.

We get asked this at the basin every week, usually by someone who's just been lightened and has read about bonds online. Here's the comparison without the marketing.

What does a bond builder actually do?

Bleach and permanent colour break some of the disulphide bonds inside the hair — the internal links that give it strength and stretch. Break enough and hair loses elasticity, and hair without elasticity snaps. A bond builder works on that internal structure rather than the surface. That's the difference from a mask: a mask makes damaged hair feel better by coating it; a bond builder is trying to make it structurally stronger so it stops breaking. Both categories are real. The confusion comes from brands blurring them.

Olaplex: how it works

Olaplex built the category. The professional steps (No.1 and No.2) go into the colour service itself; the retail hero is No.3 Hair Perfector, a weekly at-home treatment you apply before shampooing, plus a supporting shampoo, conditioner and a growing line of extras. Its strength is that No.3 is a single, well-understood product — you add it to whatever you already use and it does its job.

The trade-off we see in the salon: on fine hair the Olaplex range can build up and feel heavy over time, and the routine grows expensive once you're buying No.3 plus the shampoo plus the conditioner plus the oil.

Sebastian NO.BREAKER: how it works

NO.BREAKER is Sebastian's bond-building range and it's built as a complete routine rather than a hero product: a pre-shampoo crème that goes on before you wash, a bonding shampoo, a melting mask, and two leave-ins — a cream and a lighter spray. Sebastian claim up to 20x stronger hair; treat the number with the usual pinch of salt, but the category genuinely works and this is a well-made version of it.

Where it wins for most of our clients: every step of the wash is doing bonding work, so you don't have to remember a separate weekly treatment; the leave-ins double as styling products, so it earns its keep on non-wash days; and it's noticeably lighter on fine hair than the Olaplex range. Where it loses: no single product has the name recognition of No.3, and if you only want one bottle to add to an existing routine, that isn't really how the range is designed.

Which one should you actually buy?

• You already own Olaplex No.3 and like it: keep using it. Don't switch for the sake of it.
• You're starting from scratch after highlights or balayage: NO.BREAKER. The pre-shampoo crème and shampoo are the backbone, add the mask weekly. It's a routine you'll actually keep up.
• Fine or flat hair that's been lightened: NO.BREAKER, specifically the spray leave-in. The lightness matters more than anything else for you.
• Hair that's dry but not breaking: neither. Bond building is corrective, not a vitamin. You want moisture — read our Hydre guide.
• Hair that's breaking AND rough: NO.BREAKER for the bonds plus Penetraitt to refill and seal. They do different jobs and stack well.

What matters more than the brand

Consistency, and pairing it with the right in-salon service. Either range used properly for a month beats the other used twice and forgotten. Tell your stylist which one you're on — it changes what we can safely do in one sitting. And if your hair is breaking fast, fewer heat days will do more than any bottle.

Is Sebastian NO.BREAKER as good as Olaplex?

For most people, yes. Both are genuine bond builders and both work. NO.BREAKER is a complete routine that's lighter on fine hair; Olaplex has the better-known standalone treatment in No.3. The right one depends on whether you want a system or a single add-on.

Can I use NO.BREAKER and Olaplex together?

You can, but there's little point — they're doing the same job. Pick one bond builder and pair it with a repair or moisture range instead, which does a different job.

How long does NO.BREAKER take to work?

Expect the change in elasticity — less snapping, more stretch — over three to four weeks of consistent use, not after one wash. That's true of every bond builder.
