Most people who think they have "difficult" curls have actually just been caring for curly hair as though it were straight hair. Once you understand how to care for curly hair on its own terms, it stops being a daily battle and becomes one of the easiest hair types to live with.
The core truth is this: curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair. The bends in each strand stop the scalp's natural oils from travelling down the hair, so curls need more moisture and gentler handling. Build your routine around that and your curls will thank you.
Wash less, and wash gently
Curly hair does not need frequent washing, and over-washing is one of the most common mistakes. Stripping curls of their natural oils too often leaves them dry, frizzy and prone to breakage.
For most curl types, washing once or twice a week is plenty. Use a gentle, hydrating shampoo rather than a harsh, foamy one, and concentrate it on the scalp. Let the lather rinse through the lengths rather than scrubbing them. Our curly hair collection covers shampoos formulated to cleanse curls without stripping, and Kerastase Curl Manifesto, in the Kerastase Curl Manifesto collection, is a range we trust for curls in the salon.
Make conditioner the main event
For curly hair, conditioner is not optional, it is the centre of the routine. Curls drink up moisture, so be generous.
Apply conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends every single wash. Many curly-haired clients also benefit from detangling with conditioner still in the hair, using fingers or a wide-tooth comb and working gently from the ends upward. Curls are at their most fragile when wet, so never drag a brush through them.
Add a weekly deep treatment from our masks and treatments collection. A rich mask restores the moisture that keeps curls springy, defined and frizz-resistant.
Style on soaking-wet hair
Curl definition is set while the hair is wet. The biggest difference between defined curls and a frizzy cloud is usually when and how products were applied.
Apply your styling products, a curl cream, gel or both, to soaking-wet hair, not damp or dry. Work them through gently, scrunching upward towards the scalp to encourage the curl to form. A leave-in conditioner first adds hydration and slip, and you can find leave-in options in our leave-in collection.
The aim is to coat each curl while it is still holding its shape from the water. Once hair starts to dry, the curl pattern is harder to influence.
Dry curls without disturbing them
How you dry curls matters as much as how you style them.
- Stop rough towel-drying. A terry towel roughs up the cuticle and shatters curl clumps into frizz. Squeeze gently with a microfibre towel or a soft cotton t-shirt.
- Plop or scrunch to encourage shape rather than rubbing.
- If you blow-dry, use a diffuser. A diffuser spreads the airflow so it dries curls without blasting them apart. Use a low to medium heat, and always apply heat protection first.
- Do not touch. The more you handle curls as they dry, the more frizz you create. Style, then leave them alone until fully dry.
Refresh between washes
Because curly hair is washed less often, you need a way to revive curls on day two and beyond. A simple refresh, a spritz of water or a curl-refreshing spray, scrunched gently through the hair, brings curls back to life without a full wash. A little leave-in conditioner on the driest sections helps too.
Protect curls overnight
Curls flatten and frizz against a cotton pillowcase overnight. Two easy fixes: sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or loosely gather your curls into a high, loose "pineapple" on top of your head. Both dramatically reduce the friction that undoes your styling while you sleep.
Get a curl-aware cut
Finally, curly hair needs to be cut with its curl pattern in mind. A cut designed for straight hair can leave curls without shape or balance. A stylist who understands curls will cut to work with your specific pattern, removing weight where it drags curls down and keeping length where it supports the shape.

The stylist's summary
Caring for curly hair comes down to working with its nature, not against it. Wash less and gently, make conditioner the main event, style with product on soaking-wet hair, dry without disturbing the curl, refresh between washes and protect curls overnight. Add a curl-aware cut and well-defined, hydrated, healthy curls become your everyday normal.
FAQ
How often should I wash curly hair? Most curly hair does best washed once or twice a week. Curls are naturally drier, so frequent washing strips the oils they need. Refresh between washes with water or a curl-refreshing spray.
Why is my curly hair so frizzy? Frizz in curly hair usually comes from dryness, damage or rough handling. Hydrate well, apply styling products to soaking-wet hair, stop rough towel-drying and use a diffuser rather than direct heat.
Should I brush curly hair? Avoid brushing dry curls, which shatters the curl pattern into frizz. Detangle gently with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in, working from the ends upward.
Do I need special products for curly hair? Curly hair benefits from hydrating, curl-specific shampoos, generous conditioner, a leave-in and a styling cream or gel. The products do not need to be expensive, but they should be moisture-focused and matched to your curl type.
